Thread: Legend of Xanadu - Action/rpg platformer

  1. Neo-Geo Legend of Xanadu - Action/rpg platformer

Check out that cool boss with the sword!

First things first this is one of the coolest platformers I've ever played and the graphics are stunning. I don't want to mislead anyone as this is a Japanese text heavy import, where you have to do alot of character interaction, and build levels up by doing the bump into enemies bit like in Ys.

When you complete the task you get to play a side scrolling level. You can even have another character assist you in battle. That part is really neat. The music is amazing too though most seems to be chip generated stuff, but it's Falcom so you know it is good.

There is a faq for this on the turbo list, but I get stuck on the third level. What is nice is there is a debug mode so you can play all the 2-D platforming levels in order. It can be had for a good price. I've yet to play the sequel.

    Any fans?

  2. At first when I read the title, I was thinking of the NES game, Faxanadu, which sucked. But after reading your post, I remember Gamefan having an Import preview of the game. Another missed opportunity for NEC US.

    Faxanadu(NES)

I saw screen shots of Faxanadu and thought, this game looks great, for an NES game. I rented it a few weeks later and discovered it was'nt all that great, as Nintendo Power would have you believe. It was a platformer that had a non scrolling screen. You would jump your way through the level, hacking the enemies and as soon as you hit the edge of the screen, it would scroll to the next level of platforms. Sometimes you'd end up on a platform with an enemy, pratically at your feet, with no time to react. I'm sure if you liked games that required memorization of the enemies, over actual skill of play, this would be the game for you, but for me, it was'nt that great. Perhaps I'm thinking of another game, but I doubt it.

I wasn't too impressed with Faxanadu either. It was okay but I could never get into it.

It doesn't surprise me that Nintendo Power would praise it since Nintendo published the game here.

  7. that guy on the right looks like Rolf, doesn't he?
"The other day I got out my can opener and was opening a can of worms when I thought, what am I doing?!"

  8. Faxanadu is a classic. Great atmosphere in that game. One of my favorite NES titles ever.

  9. Yeah, Faxanadu did have great atmosphere, and the music was wonderful. Virt did a rocksome remix of the main theme.

As for the game itself, it's somewhat flawed, but I look forward to playing it once more when I get a working NES again.

  10. Faxanadu kicked ass. It was a really good game.

Hmm Didn't know there were so many variations, and the Faxandu was somehow connected. Weren't the Xanadu games also related to Falcoms Dragon Slayer series in name, Legend of Heroes?

  12. There's a rundown of the Dragon Slayer series here:

    http://homepage2.nifty.com/tkdate/about/about.html

It encompasses a *lot* of Falcom's different (sub-)series. Legend of Xanadu I and II look sweet. I'd like to pick up both of them soon, now that I've got a Duo-R on the way. A note: Dragon Slayer IV came to the US as Legacy of the Wizard.

  13. i've been wanting to play this for years. it was one of those games where you saw pics of the cutscenes back in the day and you thought it had to be the coolest shit in the world. if i get my hands on it one day, it might be the first time i force myself to play through a text heavy import.
But maybe I'm the only one that questions why they are trying to save a girl with the body of a 12 year old boy in every jrpg, when you are fighting monsters that look like Morrigan from darkstalkers.

  14. I think I remember having some painful times with Faxanadu's passwords.. like the 0's looked like O's.. etc.. I'm sure it was Faxanadu that had an annoying font but I could be wrong. Anyone else had issues with it?

  15. Faxanadu's password system was horrible for that reason. They gave you over 40 characters. The entire alphabet, capital and lowercase, plus numbers. It's really hard to tell O's, 0's and I think Q's apart as well. I can remember tons of times haven't to go back to old passwords because I didn't write my newer ones down correctly. I think I read that the Japanese version had a save feature, but they took it out in the US one to save money.

I got Faxadanu when I was young and really enjoyed it. I played throught it (with game genie codes) a few years ago and still had a good time. It's a huge adventure, and often takes time to find out where to go next. Lots of equipment, which is rare in an action/RPG. I think the soundtrack for the game is simply incredible, lots of catchy tunes. It's nothing but a classic to me.

I think I found out about Legend of Xanadu on this board a few years ago. I tried to find an iso of the game but had no luck, wouldn't have been able to get far anyway without an FAQ it sounds.
