Thread: What Are You Reading?

  1. I never read books, books are dumb. But I just started reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance 'cause I thought it might be about motorcycle maintenance. It's not, but I'm 100 pages in now. I read quite slowly, so that's a lot for me. Digging the book thoroughly.

  2. John Gribbin - Schrodinger's Kittens and the Search for Reality: Solving the Quantum Mysteries

After finishing the first one (Search for Schrodinger's Cat, I think). The behavior of quantum particles is fascinating stuff. Two slits experiment still gets me even though it's been years now since I first read about it.

  3. I just started reading Level 26 by Anthony Zuiker. So far its pretty captivating. It's written like a screen play, well it should be he is the screen writer and creator of the TV show CSI. Anyway, it follows the tale of Special Circ Steve Dark and Thomas Riggins(played by Micheal Ironside). The neat part about the book is at certain chapters of the book. It gives you a code and website to go to. When you do you can watch a video.

    I like it so far.

  4. Just read Chuck Palahniuk's new book, Tell-All. Piece of crap imo.

You know how when you go back and read an author's earlier works and you can spot al the ways that they're not as refined as their more recent stuff, and you can basically track that author's progression in skill? Palahniuk has shown the exact opposite of that. He just gets worse and worse.

Picked up The Princess Bride (I totally fell for the context story =[) and the Search for Schodinger's Cat.

I fucking love the shit out of the Princess Bride, and the physics book is really interesting so far.

  6. I used to cite The Princess Bride as my favorite book of all time. The S. Morgenstern thing was absolutely brilliant in my opinion.

I found The Search for Schrodinger's Cat to be fairly dry and frequently over my head for the first 3/4s or so. It isn't until near the end that he really starts getting into the fascinating quantum stuff. The sequel starts off much more accessible.

Mzo, if you like that subject at all, try Brian Greene's The Fabric of the Cosmos. Sooooo good. He makes classical physics, quantum mechanics, and string theory absolutely come alive with the perfect blend of accessibility and technical detail.

FINALLY finished The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology by Ray Kurzweil. I don't agree with everything he's said, but there are some fascinating ideas in here. It's pretty heavy sometimes, but I'd still recommend it to anyone that isn't a fucking moron.

edit: It kind of needs to be said that this pretty much boils down to: religion for techies.

  8. I think I'll read that after I get done with GEB.

  9. Finished Level 26. Good read, simple story, and action heavy. I am still a bit let down about the ending. The ending was sad, it ends badly for everyone, and it was a bit anti-climatic; because it leads in to the next chapter of the series.

Finished Jurassic Park. It was fucking spectacular.

Is The Lost World the letdown I fully expect it to be?
