That is such a rare and obscure book, I am so glad you summed it up for us.
Metamorphosis by Kafka: it's pretty much about a man who wakes up one morning to find that he has been transformed into a giant bug.

Me too, but please use spoiler tags next time, tyre!
I finished Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway (Ernest). It's pretty much about an old man who wakes up one morning to find that he has been transformed into a giant bug.
I remember reading old man and the sea. I will never read any of his other novels.
His novels are shit. His short stories are where it's at.
I tried reading A Farewell to Arms. I could not finish.
Try For Whom the Bell Tolls. Way better.
I'm currently reading Stephen King's Full Dark, No Stars. The short story format really plays to his strengths; he pulls you in, but it ends before he can let you down with a bullshit throwaway ending.
