Thread: What Are You Reading?

  1. I know Brian wrote several prequel books, but from what I understand only one is in the main Dune storyline, that being the one that just came out, right? I read a bried synopsis of the book and it doesn't look very intrigueing, of course I didn't want to read too much because I didn't want to spoil anything in the later of his father's books.

I read the Pre-Prequels written by Brian, they are nothing special (keep in mind I read them before I read the first dune book too). As I recall, the Pre-Prequels didn't really give anything away as the story happened thousands (?) years prior to the events in Dune.

  3. I was referring to Sandworms of Dune, which is apparently the last book in his father's series, and is based on notes left by FH. I'm not even remotely interested in reading the prequels.

  4. I'm reading an odd young adult novel titled "An Abundance of Katherines." Apparently, its a book about an 18 year old genius who has only dated girls named Katherine and he continues to keep getting dumped by them.

I'm reading this for two reasons:

    1) The author of the book is a fan of The Mr. T Experience, and supposedly every chapter of the book was written to the tune of a different Mr. T Experience song...and apparently listening to the music while reading the book is pretty awesome

    2) I'm still looking for SSR books for my English class, and I like to read these books before putting them in my SSR library. Shit, Frank Portman's book "King Dork" was classified as a youth novel as well...and it has all kinds of BJ's and sexual situations in there...

  7. I'm reading "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez. Excellent book and I thought it would be a bit dry since it is a translation, but it's actually got heart and a sense of humor. I am also reading Splatterpunks 2 story compilation just for fun. I am surprised I just heard of this Splatterpunk thing; they write some funny, gory stories.

I approve of this post actually.

  10. I'm reading a collection of non-fiction by Jorge Luis Borges, and the fact that much of it is translated from Spanish is interesting. The book has hundreds of articles and essays in it and they're all translated by about five people. By the end you kind of get a feeling for each individual translator, and start enjoying their take on the material almost as much as Borges' original writing.

I've read a lot of books in translation, and I'm trying to learn French, partly so I can read some of this writing in its original language and compare it with what I was originally offered in English.
