Thread: What Are You Reading?

  1. I picked up Confessor by Terry Goodkin, the tenth and last of his Wizards First Rule series. Bought it Sunday, finished it Monday. It was another of those books where the story is extremely decompressed for the first 570 pages, only to be wrapped up whirlwind in the last 30 pages. It was ok, but after ten books, I expected a more grandiose ending.

  2. Confessor is the 11th Sword of Truth book.

I stopped reading this series after the fifth one. I adored the first, was disturbed by the rampant Wheel of Time plagiarism in the second, then became more and more disillusioned with books three through five, as Goodkind revealed an unsettling, perverse pleasure in torturing his main characters -- both physically and mentally -- in the absolute worst ways imaginable, to an extent I'd never seen before, not even in the most gruesome horror novel.

  3. You are right, but each book had a rule, I can't think of the one that didn't.
As far as torturing the characters, I take it you've never read George RR Martin?
It was one of those series where sometimes bad things happen to people, but nothing long lasting. Denna tortured the shit out of Richard, but the way everything ends happily, it doesn't have that much of an impact on me. You know the main characters will get hurt, but they'll never die, so who cares?
That's one thing I like about Martin, you never fucking know with that guy.

  4. Just finished this:

I'm not worried about them dying, I'm worried about them experiencing unimaginable pain -- which is what Goodkind reveled in.

I read the first two Song of Ice and Fire books, and found them pretty tame. People die, sure, but there's not a focus on torture or gratuitous gore, pain, etc.

The last book doesn't have a numbered rule associated with it -- Wizard's Ultimate Rule: Confessor. Or something like that.

  6. yeah, the last rule was "the unwritten rule"

  7. Has anyone read The Once and Future King, the book The Sword in the Stone is based off? It was one of my favorite Disney movies and I was thinking of picking this up EDIT: on my wish list (^_*)...

  8. For a minute I thought you were talking about the 14th century poems and I was going to recommend that you shoot yourself instead.

  9. Thanks English Bob. I appreciate it.

  10. I do what I can to protect people from boring literature.

Never read anything by Henry James.
