Thread: What Are You Reading?

  1. I finished WWZ, and was pretty impressed with how good it was. I don't know why I didn't really expect it to meet up to standards, but it held up all the way through and made for a really good read.

I put 20th Century Ghosts on hold to read more cheery, christmasy things--So I'm reading Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris.

  2. Just started reading "Take The Cannoli" by Sarah Vowell. It's a series of pretty damn funny essays about America and The Godfather. I'm a huge "This American Life" fan, so it's great. I got her to sign my copy of The Incredibles at a book reading in ATL.

Also reading Steve Martin's autobiography, "Born Standing Up", which I'll be sending to my dad for Christmas. Great book.

I want to read Sarah Vowell's other book about her vacation visiting spots related to presidential assassinations. Sounds up my alley. I want to read the Steve Martin book too.

Assassination Vacation? It's a great book. I'm trying to track down a copy of her book Radio-On, now.

Steve Martin is rad. I long ago decided I'm going to learn the banjo one day because of him. His autobio is very insightful.

  5. Anyone here a fan of Graham Greene? He wrote The Power and the Glory, and the book I am reading by him right now titled Our Man in Havana.

The latter is a pretty funny book, nice break from all the deep philosophical novels etc. I had been reading before that.

  6. A professor I had in school is apparently working on a documentary about Graham Green, and is working with Martin Scorsese and such to get it made. He talked about it all the time.

Of course, I think he's been working on it for like 10 years, so he's probably just completely full of shit.

  7. I'm reading The Terror by Dan Simmons. It's a historical novel about the two English ships Erebus and Terror, which disappeared (along with all crew members) while trying to find the fabled Northwest Passage during the 1840s - one of the great naval mysteries in history.

Simmons' explanation has something to do with a huge creature hiding in the ice, stalking the men and literally ripping them apart, and an Eskimo woman believed to be a witch.

It's slow going in parts, tending to focus too much on the history. Simmons has obviously done his homework and isn't shy about showing it. I cannot believe the brutal conditions these men endured regarding the cold, food, and isolation, but Simmons is such a good writer that it's worth it.

It's an incredible read. It's part Ken Burns, part The Thing, and part Predator. I can't wait to find out the answers...assuming there are any.

    Satoshi Kon: 1963-2010

  8. "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin, "The Portable Nietzsche" by Friedrich Nietzsche and Walter Kaufmann, and "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson (for movie comparison).

  9. Wild Cards: The Black Trump, Age of Turbulence (Alan Greenspan) and Dreamsong Vol 1 (GRRMartin)

  10. The Far Side GAllery 3
