Thread: Turning TNL into an online GameFan

  1. What's this? Post reviews you say...
    matthewgood fan
    lupin III fan

  2. Gamefan wasn't just all about the writing. It was the layouts on thick paper with the awesome screens and art everywhere that made it seem like the magazine was made by people who gave a shit. Above all it was it was my only connection to the only gaming community that had anything exciting going on. But now there's TNL, with hundreds of interesting people as opposed to just a handfull, so what's the point of going back?

ok, stupid joke aside, i think tnl serves a vital role as it is. Gamefan was about a lot of things, quality screen shots, strong editorial quality, wonderful website, a like-minded attitude towards spelling and grammar, but the core element for me was that it really gave a voice to, and spoke for the gamer who was really, really into gaming and some of the closer related hobbies, and what they should check out. Egm and the others, while they did a competent job of writing about games, seemed to spend too much time talking about games i could have cared less about, gamefan had a pretty good hit rate for what i wanted to know. And that i what i find here, its a community rather than a editor, but that just means that there are more opinions, good and bad, so i can even out from the responses what really works or dosent. But i am happy with gamefan being fondly remembered in the past, it served its puropse, but now it would even be a step backwards.

  4. Yeah, I made the comparison in another thread.

I was comparing the diverse and trustworthy personalities more than the actual physical lay-out of the mag obviously.

I really dont take into account opinions of any gaming mags before I make a purchase. I just check an official thread here >>> none of you guys do this too??

And I say NO to changing TNL - It's definitely not broke so it needs no fixing -- If you guys want to add more reviews or whatever than "kick-ass" : go to town , but I wouldnt suggest making us pay to see 'em -- .......unless you guys want to get hurt

  5. I don't pay to read reviews. The last time I did was GameGo! volume one. I get thoughts and impressions from people I respect for free. At this message board and a few others. If it wasn't free, I'd just be looking at the "few others" that are. I have never read a "review" or "preview" at this site. There are a million and one places to look at games, see screenshots and talk about games in a personal manner. Elevating TNL's review people to paid employees and charging money won't make this site any more informative than it is now. Plus there's a bit of purity of heart that comes from just having paid $50 for a game. When stuff is free for reviewers it sort of leaves the door open for an expose thread by Red Cloak. In case you didn't get that joke, recieving free goods makes people lazy and causes them to care less about alot of games. Why do I want a review from a person who would never have played a particular game in one million years if it hadn't been given to them for free?

In short, it's either for love or money. I ain't impressed with money.

  6. I like TNL because of how well it works thanks to the posters who both provide some real insight and how well most of us get along. I do like a little of what you could compare with this site to gamefan, but the truth is this site stands on it's own two feet and it's much better we make sure it works for what it is rather then to continue placing it in the shadow of a long-dead publication.

Now I don't see how you got the idea of charging readers for reviews, this site has been based on the forums almost completely and it's meant for free speech vs pay-per-read. I don't subscribe to sites like gamespot or IGN besause it's within those boundries our rights to view freely have been restricted. Placing a system that is anything remotely simular to it is clearly unwelcome and it's not worth the risk of losing people that make all the difference. Far as I'm concerned, this is the best place for gamers on the net and I wouldn't want to see anything like that taken away in the name of $$$.

That idea could work for something else however, like maybe a new site that offers what the mainstream wouldn't even think of, but since I'm a little picky over what I pay for, I'd rather have it in print! ^_^

I don't know if I can agree with that, but when gamersrepublic was out, it fit the term of being Gamefan's spiritual successor more then anything else. Funny thing is gamefan was still around at the time and I really enjoyed them both.

Now what makes me laugh with Dave H. happenes to be how he's covering almost 90% of all game reviews and while I'm not sure if he's stealing his employee's articals to take credit for it, he does come off quite well as gaming's biggest fanboy.

hell if he loves gaming so much, maybe just for once I'd like to see somebody drag his ass to the boards and see what turns up from him. I think it could turn out to be interesting to say the least.

Now when I read this, it really hit the nail in the head how the mag stood for what it was being published for, a "gamers' magazine" if that's the best term for it. What I remeber of other publications... EGM, next generation... they were just that, "publications" in which the people who may have loved gaming are now just doing it for a job. There really wasn't anything to connect to in their reading material to speak of. Gamefan just had the type of fan-fair that we needed to get the proper look of how games can be enjoyed. The style in which it was written did a good job of showing how "into" games these guys were and it wasn't just something to pass off as literature reading material. It really is sad that it's gone now (you doubters happy now?), everything has become quite stale without it.

    FLASH!

    TNL has actual content! http://www.the-nextlevel.com

    FILM AT ELEVEN.

  10. I am all for free Internet and I will never charge for the content at TNL, even after we start to publish more and better features. The changes we have been promising are coming, but no matter how good this place gets, the content will remain free. If I didn't charge when I was unemployed and losing hundreds of dollars a month on server costs, you better believe I am not going to charge when we finally get glitzier and I have a full-time job. I don't even put watermarks on our images, because this site is about passion for games and an appreciation and respect for fellow gamers. In that sense among others, we are the new Gamefan. We just need to get bigger and sharper, and that is our plan.
