Thread: Moving can be tough

  1. Kirby Moving can be tough

Well, I moved to Crofton on October 1st.

It's a good thing too, 'cause otherwise, I was gonna live in the Deep South Dungeon.

Maybe a little backstory is in order.

See, I moved outta my house about 3.5 years ago (give or take). I remember that I moved out the same day that Fight Club was released on DVD. Moved in with two friends of mine, and for a time, it was good. However, by the end of the year, they couldn't cut it in the wilderness called adult life, and went back to their parents houses. I didn't really have anything lined up as far as a new roommate, so I was happy to find out that my friend James had a couch I could stay on for awhile, until I found a new place.

However, a couch and half of a closet isn't quite enough space for me. Luckily, Ste-Von decided it was time to move and after almost 3 months of living on a couch, he and I got an apartment in beautiful Forest Village Apartments of Annapolis, MD.

The apartment was quite "posh" (especially since I was used to living in Harbour Gates Apartments, which is where the bling-bling types lived.) but it got the job done. And we had a fun ass time there. That apartment was where Chux and 88mph started hanging out with us. But, somewhere near the end of our second year there, some other friends (Ross and Nane) expressed interest in moving out.

So now, instead of it being just Ste-Von and I, it was gonna be 4 of us guys altogether. They seemed to be a little more proactive on the subject of finding us a place, so I let them take charge on it, and paid it mostly no mind, except to go look at whichever houses they thought were good. Hell, the 3 of 'em even scared us up a real estate agent. And for a time, it was good. One of the first places the agent showed us (a big 'ol house in Cape St. Claire) was the hot hotness. I was quite excited about moving there. However, by the time we got our money together for it, the house was taken. Bummer. So, this agent showed us like 3 or 4 more houses, and none of 'em could compare to the first place we looked at, much less were they any good. He decided he didn't feel like helping us any more, because he wasn't gonna make enough money off of us, so we bid him farewell.

I kinda started to panic a little bit at this point becuase by now, Ste-Von and I had declined to renew our lease at Forest Village and come October 1st we had to be out. I suppose it bares mentioning that when I moved away from my parents, there was some bad blood involved (that has only recently been cleared up) and moving home for awhile, which would be a valid course of action for Ste-Von, would NOT be an option for me.

So, While bitching about this at the DSS, it turned out a kid from the local Journeys heard us, and let us know his father was a real estate agent. And since Ross was kinda friends with that guy, he became the go between for us with the new agent.

Backtracking a bit, perhaps some of you are wondering what the DSS is? No? Well, I don't care, and I'm gonna tell you about it anyhow. Feel free to skip to the next paragraph if you don't care. DSS stands for Deep South Snowshakes. It's Annapolis' premiere smoothy bar (located in the heart of Annapolis Mall). I've been the manager there for 3 years, and we've employed such luminaries as Chux and 88mph over the years. It's also the site of most of the pictures that I've posted here over the years. Anyway, back on track...

So, the new agent gives Ross a few listings for some houses to look at, and we go see a few of them, but it's now been 2 weeks with this guy, and they've pretty much all been rubbish. The guys were also checking out houses of their own during this time (from newspaper ads and whatnot) but nothing is really working out. But then, Ross told me the guy found a winner. We all went down there, and we really dug the place. Sure, it was in The Vista (not my first choice of neighborhoods) but it had a kickass wraparound deck and plenty of room for all 4 of us. We were all set to sign a lease, and we had one month left to get outta Forest Village village.

Myself, Ste-Von, Nane, and my girlfriend went up to Arundel Mills mall to see some movies, and then we got a bite to eat at the Fuzio pasta joint. As we're waiting for our order to come I mention to Nane how excited I am to get into an actual house (as opposed to an apartment) and in replay he says this: "Uh yeah, about that... I don't think I'm gonna be able to move out. It just doesn't make sense for me financially.". I went silent for a bit. I mean, WTF?! HE's the one who was most pushing for Ste-Von and I to get a new place, 'cause he wanted to move out, and then one month before Steve and I have to be out, and like, 1 day before we sign a lease, he decides to back out. I mean hell, if he wasn't gonna be able to afford it, I think he shoulda worked that out with us just a LITTLE bit sooner, don't you? Ste-Von doesn't seem to really care one way or the other about it, but to this day I still carry a little bit of animosity towards him. He's still my boy, but you just don't fuck with people like that.

Ya see, a funny thing happened a few days before this pasta dinner. Hurricane Isabell. My girlfriend lived with her Mother Father and Sister (and 7 cats) in North Beach, MD. Until the hurricane hit that is. Her entire neighborhood was wiped off of the face of the earth (ok, I might be exaggerating a little bit here, 'cause it didn't break off into the sea like California is one day, but needless to say, no one lives there anymore). So my girlfriend (henceforth referred to as "Meredith") grabbed 3 of her cats, and came to stay with me in my apartment. Her mother grabbed the other 4 cats and went to live with her sister (Merediths aunt) and Merediths sister went to live with some friends. So now, in the event that Ste-Von, Ross, and I don't find a place to live in the next month, not only am I homeless, but so is Meredith and her cats.

With Nane out of the picture it's time for us to start looking for 3 bedroom places. Finally, with one week to go, we find a place we want, and put in an application for it. However, we don't get the place. Panic is now setting in. Seeing as the agents that Ste-Von, Nane, and Ross have gotten us were somewhat useless, I decided to make a few phonecalls. Luckily Freddy Blaze (of the "My nuts in yo mouff' ANNOUNCED!" thread) gives me the number for his agent. With 4 days to go before homelessness her and I get down to work. We fiund a place day one, but someone else got an app in before us. Things were looking grim by Saturday (We had to be out on Monday). We checked out a bunch of places, and found an excellent townhome in Crofton, MD. However, it seemed unlikely that we'd be able to move in my Monday. We completed the paperwork that evening and just crossed our fingers. Monday 'came, and we still had no word on the new place. So, Ste-Von and I just packe all of our things, not knowing where we'd end up. Around 4pm I got a call from my agent. IT WORKED OUT, AND WE COULD BE IN BY MONDAY!!!!!!!!111oneeleven I don't think I've ever been more relieved about anything in my life. I let out a victory scream of sorts, and then got right down to business. We immediately got a U-Haul lined up, and I started making arrangements with the electric, phone, and cable companies.

See, the thing is, you can't get your cable or DSL transferred over in one day. So, I missed like 2 weeks worth of WWE (luckily, I had peeps to tape it for me). Also, I didn't get DSL back until the 14th. To make a bit of a bold statement, I missed this place.

Luckily, I had Viewtiful Joe to hold me over in your absence. And, I don't think I've been this satisfied to beat a game in some time, because there was no way for me to access the internet. When I got stuck, instead of hitting GameFAQs or asking you guys, I just had to tough it out. And damned if I didn't stand in front of that stupid barrell (right after you get the Mach Speed power) for like 20 minutes. And that lava boss was BRUTAL. Yet, I persevered.

I also got to see a few shows in my "downtime". I saw Del, Souls of Mischief, and Heiroglyphics at the Ottobar in downtown Baltimore. I also saw The Strokes at UMBC, and I saw Michelle Branch at the 9:30 Club in DC. All of 'em were good, but The Strokes were far and away the best. Tonight, I'm off to see WWE No Mercy LIVE at Baltimores First Mariner Arena. Of course, when I bought the (floor) tickets, I couldn't have forseen that the main event was gonna be the first ever father/daughter "I Quit" match between Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon. Nor would I have expected to see A-Train vs. Chris Benoit on a show bereft of Matt Hardy, but hey, you win some you lose some.

So in closing, this was just a long ass essay to tell you guys that I missed you, and that I'm back. Now, off to see what you guys thought about the TCM remake...

  2. I am in between places right now at the moment myself and to make matters worse I have a wife and two kids to worry about..

The temp place im in now is TINY and a real hole but ittl do untill we can buy a place, which has been a gigantic nightmare considering we have decent credit and a large chunk for a down payment.

To make matters worse Verizon the mother of all fuckups of a dsl providers screwed up the reprovisioning of my dsl line "im only moving 2 houses over" so instead of setting things a week and a half ago because they "forgot" to put the order through.. I now have to waite like 7-10 days for it to go through.

Luckily im on dial up.... which after having dsl for the past 5 years fucking sucks hamster balls... but its better then nothing...

Anyways congrats on getting a place.. and everyone wish me luck on this home im trying to purchase, we should hear something Monday or Tuesday...

I swear I have aged 10 years in the last 2 months of trying to buy a house...

    It's good to be back.

  5. Not that this is relevant, but I also live in Crofton! Just that it's probably about 3000 miles away from your one.

  6. Good to have you back, Korly.

  7. Hey man. Welcome back.

I personally hate moving. Few times we did, were really stressing, and I will make sure that next time I have to move, I will be hiring some help. Last time when me and my buddy had to carry out ours furtniture(and back then we had much less stuff then we have now) from 3rd floor of the buidling without elevator was fun enough.

  9. i feel your pain about the internet loss. although i'm on dsl, the computer i'm using is unbelievably slow; so slow in fact, that when i go to message boards, it scrolls down too slow for me to bother most of the time. posting is even worse. i have to keep notepad open and type in my post there, then cut and paste. soon as i get my main comp up and running(right in time for those pc games i got from tracer and max payne 2), i can't wait to resume regular posting.
