    Neo-Geo Pocket This generation's sequels to classic series

    So what do you think of this generation's sequels to classic series?
    My thoughts on some of them:

    Shinobi - A good game. It's nowhere near my favourite in the series and the level design needs work but I liked it enough to be excited for Nightshade.

    Wario World - I was quite pleased with this one. Treasure pulled off an old-school platformer in 3d without resorting to scavenger hunt BS.

    Wario Ware - This is definitely my top Wario game and one of the best games of this generation. It's so original and addictive.

    Zelda WW - A very polished game but my enjoyment was hindered by too much of a "been there, done that" feeling. Ocarina is a better game but Wind Waker is much more well-made than Majora's Mask.

    Megaman - I haven't played the GBA ones yet(I can't even keep track of them all) but I thought the GC game sucked.

    Street Fighter III - I love the animation and gameplay but I'm not too keen on some of the character designs.

    Castlevania - I haven't played the PS2 one yet but I'm not too optimistic after reading people's opinions. Same goes for TMNT. At least I really like the GBA Castlevania games.

    Super Mario Sunshine - Not a bad game but the design doesn't compare to previous Marios. It's a shame, especially since it looks, sounds and controls beautifully.

    Planet Harriers - A dull sequel to an all-time classic.

    Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - I was impressed with the demo(wall running rocks) but I haven't played enough to fully judge it yet.

    Advance Wars - These games kick ass and are among my favourite strategy games. There's such attention to detail.

    Sonic Adventure - I loved the first one although not as much as the Genesis games. The adventure segments were underdeveloped but the action was excellent. SA2 was disappointing. Instead of fixing the problems with SA1(non-Sonic characters), they made the problems worse.

    Metroid Fusion - Good stuff but they messed with the Metroid formula a but too much.

    Metroid Prime - A worthy transition to 3d for the series. I still think Super is superior though.

    Phantasy Star Online - I spent many hours with the first DC version. It's obviously a different experience than the old PStar games but I felt it lived up to the name.

  2. Cut-n-paste on a few of my views:

    Shinobi - Excellent, one of the best action games on the PS2 and better then most of the originals that I've played.

    Wario World - Same feelings as NeoZeedeater.

    Zelda WW - Damn fine game.

    Megaman - Network is abusive of rehashing, but the Megaman Zero games have become my favorite side-scrolling Megamans ever.

    Street Fighter III - Incredible.

    Castlevania - The SOTN-style games are leagues beyond the originals, and LoI is like a hybrid old-school/new-school without platforming.

    Super Mario Sunshine - Great game, I loved it.

    Planet Harriers - I still want to try this.

    Sonic Adventure - Side characters are annoying, but I feel SA2 blows away every single Genesis Sonic hands-down.

    Metroid Fusion - Crappy.

    Metroid Prime - One of the greatest games ever made.

    Phantasy Star Online - I haven't played the originals so I can't comment if it's better, but it sure was addicting for a while.

  3. I think my favorite sequel to old classics is by far Metrioid Prime. The atmosphere was great and I don't usually like FPS's but I loved this one. For a week or so it took to beat the game I was in video game bliss.

    Sonic - no

  6. Well lets see here, I'll just go off of your list here.

    Shinobi - Excellent game. It wasn't as good as Shinobi III, but it was still a hell of alot of fun, and frustratingly hard to boot.

    Wario World - It was a bit too short for my taste, but I did enjoy it while it lasted

    Wario Ware - Incredible game, although I don't know if it's really a sequel of any type... it's a new game series IMO.

    Zelda WW - A hell of alot of fun. Although I really would have liked a few more dungeons. Not as mind blowing as Ocarina was, but still great.

    Megaman - Ugh. I'm sick of the X series and never got into the Battle Networks... I wish they'd make a 2d MM9 for me already.


    Castlevania - A decent game, but it doesn't quite live up to the Castlevania name due to the atrocious level design. Future sequels may though.

    TMNT - Disasters. Both the GBA and Console games just aren't fun. I would have been happier paying $40 for a port of the arcade games.

    Super Mario Sunshine - I enjoyed it, but it won't be showing up on any of my best games of all time lists.

    Advance Wars - The wars games always have and always will rule.

    Sonic Adventure - SA1 was amazing at the time... except for a few crappy characters (BIG) it was excellent and lived up to the sonic name. The sequel was depressing though.

    Metroid Fusion - Too short and too linear... but still fun. Definitely the worst of the Metroid games... but that's still better then 90% of the crap out there.

    Metroid Prime - Absolutely incredible. Currently this game is my favorite game of this Generation. I've said it before and I'll say it again, one of the greates transitions from 2d to 3d ever.

    Phantasy Star Online - The DC game ate up my time like no other. I still haven't gotten around to opening my XB copy though.

    And here's a couple of more I'll add to the list:

    Rygar - It would have been great, if the combat hadn't been so repetitive... I really got sick of fighting the same damned slug over and over and over and over and over. It was still fun though.

    Contra Shattered Soldier - Hella fun. Hard as hell but doable once you learn the patterns. A game that is worthy of the Contra name (unlike the PS games)

    Wizardry Tale of the Forsaken Land - Currently my favorite Wizardry game (I still haven't gotten around to playint 8). It's amazing what happens when the Japanese get their hands on the Wizardry formula. A mindblowingly good soundtrack and classic gameplay made me incredibly happy. It's only for Wizardry fans though, as many find the dungeon crawling repetitive and boring. I hope they bring the sequel to the US.

    Maximo - While not technically a sequel to GnG, it certainly does the games justice. Just the right amount of difficulty made me love this game.

    I feel if they used the animation to the SFII cast, all the players would have come back instead of ignoring it and killing off what chance of a great sequel we could've been made llater on. (stupid little noob bastards)

    I think this has to do with the game being liner, which wasn't something I was too bugged with. Everyone else has a problem however...

    Metroid Prime - A worthy transition to 3d for the series. I still think Super is superior though.
    Movement was a joke compared to what most FPS use on console, they have a second stick and options should have been customized to however we can set it at rather then what some developer's puny little brain thinks.

    Plus they took out the screw attack.

    Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - I was impressed with the demo(wall running rocks) but I haven't played enough to fully judge it yet.
    Hope it turns out alright, unlike that peice of crap the DC game was.

    I like a hell of a lot what they did in SOTN with the music and metroid/RPG combo, too bad the balance costs us the classic style castlevania gameplay. They don't need to be doing this with it's GBA sequels either, there's just no excuse for it.

    Take Diablo, make it 3D, add future PS elements and "WE HAVE PSO!!"

    actually, I call it the bastardization of a once great series. They didn't bring us the element of exploring algo, plus they gave us the run of the mill with their limited updates (on DC) and uninteresting hunt for rares.

    I'd say forget it, get someone else with the right idea to make us a new "Phantasy Star style" of game with some real MMORPG in mind (nobody related to sega, please!) and we'll get the type of game I was looking forward to. Shame on sega for destroying their own creation!

    Nope... they were right and you are wrong. The controls in Metroid Prime were perfect... since it isn't an FPS... you all just seem to have a problem wrapping your little heads around that concept.

    I agree with voltz that Prime needed some control customization. Doom-style control equalled motion-sickness for many people. It doesn't matter what you label the game as; first-person perspective games benefit from full range of movement whether it's an FPS or an RPG like Morrowind.
