Thread: Gaining Weight

  1. Gaining Weight

Okay, so at the gym I weighed myself and I was at a record low. This is both good and bad - good, because there's still fat on me I want to get rid of, and I have been losing it at about 1 pound per week, but bad because well, Im getting really thin and shit and I would like to start offsetting that with muscle growth. But honestly I have no clue at wht rate muscle weight should grow at.

Anyway, at what rate is realistic for gaining muscle? Im eating a lot of protein, I have this GNC protein shit that I take every day (it tastes like garbage by the way), I work out 3 times a week, etc. etc. Im not looking to become Arnold or anything and Im not gonna go to GNC and buy hydroxycut or whatever the fuck you read about in Muscle and Fitness magazine... I just wanna know whats a reasonable expectation.

  2. For my Marine Corp training I've been running up hills, doing crunches, pull-ups, and push-ups. All I've done is physical exercises and I've already made some serious progress in getting stronger on all of my physical tests and in addition have put on 18 pounds in 8 weeks. I'm sure if you were lifting weights and using protein you might be able to gain a little more.

  3. any idea where we could get protein diets that can have noticeable results in under a year, I'm willing to shape up some more now, need more bulk during the off-season.

This site should help you out, I just found it recently, and will try one of those plans (make sure you put the mouse cursor over the dude's pic).

Yeah, I've been stuck at 150-155 forever. I need to gain atleast 10 lbs of muscle.

  5. How tall are you? I'm 5'10, when I enlisted I only weighed 139 but not I'm up to 157 thereabouts. I should be breaking 160 soon.

Gaining muscle isn't the same as losing fat...it depends even more on genetics. It's really hard to say from person to person. The main rule every magazine and book says is that to gain muscle, you should eat at least one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight (spread out over 6 meals a day). Some pros go as high as 2-3 grams, which is an insane amount of food (and probably too much for a normal person). That, combined with weight training (after warming up, make sure you take your working sets to muscular failure) should make you grow. Train each muscle group once a week. Just stick with basic exercises, nothing fancy.

Oh, and there are actully some tasty whey protein powders available at GNC. Try a few. Designer Whey makes some good stuff, as does EAS. They usually tend to taste even better when mixed with milk as opposed to water.

  7. I used to really be into weight lifting, for an example my walk around weight used to be 160 or there abouts.

At my heighth of weight lifting i was 220 all muscle and ass kicking...

Then again im a freak and have lost over 60 pounds in abour 5 months...

Long story but after I quit lifting it all turned to fat.

Follow routine #1 at www.wannabebig.com and get some of those Insure drinks that old people drink, thats how I did along with protein and creatine...

Hahaha, it's exactly what I found after googling "weight gain". Thanks anyways Klonoa. Btw, im 6'0 and 160. :S

  9. diffusion, how fast you could reasonably expect to bulk up depends a lot on the bone structure, particularly in your arms. There's a certain placement of a particular bone or tendon in your arm that determines exactly how "big" you can get, if I remember correctly.

But if you just wanna gain weight, start drinking shakes and eating lots of cookies (and I'm not talking about oatmeal raisin here, it's all about chocolate chip & macademia, mang )

  10. What I've learned through weight trainers and friends who are into body building, is that working out 3 times a week is good for the first couple of weeks, but if you want to go furthur with it, you'll need to work out at least 5 days a week. At a certain point, working out 3 times a week will only maintain what you have ammassed, but won't improve upon it.

I've also heard that even though you may have a smaller bone structure, lifting weights will actually increase your bone mass as well. Your body will adjust to the added muscle and produce more bone mass. I knew this guy, who used to weight over 300 pounds. He lost a bunch of weight, but his bone mass was still large, because of the mass he used to carry. He had to get an operation on his breast plate, to reduce it's size.
