Takara's had a few PS2 releases like the latest Choro Q game and some mech game called J-Phoenix so I think they're still around.
I remember as recently as a few years ago that Takara was still porting SNK titles to other platforms.
I'm starting this thread to perhaps learn more about Takara...their beginnings, any in-house if at all, and their seemingly quiet ending. Are they still around?

As for their history, I don't know much about their pre-16-bit days but they made some Famicom games like The Lost World of Jenny.
They're still around. I think they have some PS2 games coming out soon. I found Takara's Japanese toy website, and it has a slim English section. It does have a bit of the company's history though. Check the following links:

The Japanese website is at http://www.takaratoys.co.jp/ . It doesn't make any mention of videogames, so I suppose the search goes on. ^_^
UPDATE: found another site (in all Japanese though): http://takaraland.net/content/game/index.html
UPDATE^2: here is what looks like Takara's main game site, in Japanese also: http://www.takara-game.ne.jp
