Urb's pretty spiffy.
Anyone out there read or subscribe to any music magazines? I used to read Rolling Stone bout 4 years ago, and I started reading Spin back then too. After a while I dropped Rolling Stone for these reasons:
Built to Spill's Keep It Like a Secret: Spin-9, Rolling Stone- 3 and a half stars.
Bob Dylan Live At Albert Hall: Spin-7, Rolling Stone- 5 stars.
I could go on. Needless to say, I think Rolling Stones reviews are crap. I've been reading Spin for the last 4 years or so, and pretty much everything I know about music I get from it (and a bit from Amazon.com). I don't really care who is on the cover, or the feature stories on Pink or Creed, all I care about are the music reviews, which are spot-on imo.
I got a couple of music related books recently, We Owe You Nothing- Punk Planet interviews, and Flowers In the Dustbin- The Rise of Rock and Roll 47-77. I've only read half of We Owe You Nothing so far. It has some intersting interviews with Steve Albini, Sleater-Kinney, Ian Mackaye, and Kathleen Hanna among others. Flowers is a good book about the history of rock and roll. The first half of it was very educational, since I know next to nothing about the very early days of rock. Thing is, the author (James Miller) contends rock pretty much died with Elvis and the Sex Pistols, which I think is phooey. Still, it is not a boring book, and I would reccomend it for anyone wanting to know about the early days of rock.

Classic Rock Magazine (legendary writers)
Terrorizer - greeeeaaat extreme metal mag
Metal Maniacs - much better than sister publication, metal edge..ugh.
Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles - xtreme metal mag...free sampler cds!
PIT magazine ...ocassionally
All the other mainstream mags can fuck off...especially Spin, damn I hate that mag.
Those magazines are only good if you're only interested in the latest (and usually worst) releases that the big labels have to offer.Originally posted by station82o

Terrorizer isn't an extreme metal magazine, BTW. You can hardly call it that if less than half of their mag is dedicated to metal, and the rest of the rag is dedicated to nu-metal, techno, industrial, dark pop music, punk, and hardcore.
But then, that's to be expected of a magazine that named itself after an 80s punk/grindcore band...
Mainstream Resistance!
BTW Station - Cary offered me a security job for the Soilwork show and signing at Josh's storeMay 29th. Deal eh? I'm sure you're welcome along too! Also - guess what.... Cary works at Gamestop now! Shit if we weren't overstaffed as it was! At least it's someone cool who likes True Metal! Anyway, he said he didn't dig the New Crown album :/ I thought it was ok.
I'm going to write-up something on Vintersorg just for the hell of it. If Cary wants it in MR he can have it, if not - I'll find a place for it somewhere online.

here there is this great free newspaper/magazine thats available at most music shops called "Drum media". I think they make their money through ads. Its really great, with interviews, gig info, and everything else you'll ever need.
I always wanted to pick up a copy of bass player magazine, but because the news agent has to import it, its way to expensive.
I like spin somewhat, but the uppity tone and their holier-than-thous attitude really turns me off. I also think that they drop obscure references just because it makes them sound important and knowledgeable. Other than that, they seem to be honest and not toned-down.
A mag I have enjoyed lately is OUTBURN...it's tought to find but it's insiteful, enthusiastic, and comprehensive. Give it a try if it's around.

I know what you mean by all the obscure terms they use, a review of a foreign album can especially read like total jiberish. It took me awhile, but I can go back and read a review from 3 years ago I didn't understand at the time and totally get what they mean now. I'll keep an eye out for that mag you mentioned, thanks.
I read Chunklet and Giant Robot whenever I can.
