And guess what? Saying that line didn't oppress me. It didn't brainwash me into believing in a God. It didn't push me in the direction of a cult.
Get over it.

It obviously makes some children uncomfortable, not to mention it is CLEARLY a breach of separation of church and state. If you simply desire to argue a viewpoint because you don't wish to appear "P.C." then don't bother, diffusionX has already mastered that style of debate.Originally Posted by shidoshi

When I was a kid, we said it, and if we didn't believe it or agree with it, we got on with our lives. Now that Americans have become a bunch of p***ies, instead of going on with our lives, we have to bitch and moan and cry about it. Children are only thinking that they are oppressed by saying that line because their parents are telling them that they are. It's like women went years not being offended by "policeman" or "mailman" or "fireman" until some bored assholes told them that they are supposed to be.

It didn't harm me in the least, but it sure as hell made me uncomfortable. So why bother keeping it? If people want to pledge allegiance to one god and america they can well fucking do it in their own homes. Anyway tell me why it's better to keep the pledge then get rid of it, and if you don't have a good reason don't bitch that their are people trying to get rid of it.
You are correct sir.Originally Posted by shidoshi

And it says God, no specific God just God. The only people it doesn’t apply to are the ones who don't believe in a God and if you don't believe in one then it really shouldn't bother you to conform for 50 freaking seconds 5 days a week. Hell, I conform to society by applying deodorant for more time than that every week

Oh2, I think "One Nation Under God" should be taken out because it was artifically added to what is otherwise a beautiful pledge, because it turns the pledge into a battleground, and because its a silly anachronism from a bygone era.
For us it was "My Country Tis of Thee". I can't believe I still remember it: "My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, to thee I sing. Land where my father died, land where the..."Originally Posted by IronPlant

It was pretty creepy saying the pledge of allegiance now that I think about it. We were never really told why or anything, just turn and face the flag, then say this.
I knew some people that were regularly suspended for not saying it. Though I'm not sure what sort of hurt you're speaking off. Oppression? Well, my friend was punished, though I don't think they'd burn his house down. And guess what? Saying that line didn't oppress me. It didn't brainwash me into believing in a God. It didn't push me in the direction of a cult.
brainwashing: I wonder about this sort of word, but rote repetition of something throughout your youth that you don't understand and time isn't given to explain is close enough. Ever heard someone say something like: "This is one nation under god, isn't it?" Regarding religion in America? Why, how did that notion get into someone's head? Its almost like it was washed into their brain.
Whatever. People that are so adamant about defending the line shouldn't be bothered by people that really want it gone. They've both proven its importance to them by their manner and so its foolish to say one half is just taking it to seriously while they're being reasonable themselves. Those that are for it could just say: "Ah, I suppose it doesn't matter. Ok, drop the line." if they're so for appeasement instead of standing in front of a building reciting it for the media, and those that aren't could very well see it as not that big of a deal and go about their business.
I think its a silly line in particular because of how it came about. Next thing you know the government will put out a mandate that all bathroom paper towels must be extra soft since the rough brown paper angered workers and made them America hating bolsheviks~
