I think I've worked out somethings that are throwing it off.
The perspective for the guy and the background are different. The guy is in a perspective where he is coverging into space. The background is not. The pillar is nearly straight vertical in a flat-on view. Same with the trees.
Hence, it seems that the guy isn't necessarily distorted by perspective, but rather seemingly because he is actually tiny headed.
His posture is also a reason why... because his spine is pushed back and his head forward, like he is sticking out his pelvis, due to the perpsective. If he's hunched over, his torso needs to be pushed forward more.
