Thread: What are you watching lately?

  1. I love Ed Wood. That line is even more funny in the real Glen or Glenda if I remember right. Bill Murray's great in that too.

Nice Captain Beefheart reference in your user status thing, btw.

Is Samurai Fiction any good? I saw the trailer and I've been dying to see it. Looked hilarious.

  3. Some friends got me to watch Hedwig and the Angry Inch and I liked it enough to buy it, even if drag queens scare me. Awesome characters and music.

    Fast'n bulbous, got me?

  5. Watched Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction over again recently, both those movies are even better than I remembered them. Pulp Fiction was always my favorite, but now I prefer Reservoir Dogs. Just something about how it's all set up, it's perfect. Pulp Fiction is more sloppy and all over the place. I wanted to watch the movie again immediately after it was over, and I'm addicted to the soundtrack.

Japanese assassin movie Sharkskin Man & Peach Hip Girl was fun to watch over again, though I remembered why I originally got bored with it. The movie starts out with a huge comic book style rock & roll intro and sets it up to be a really fast-paced exciting movie, then it slows to a snail crawl. Interesting characters and good violence save it from the dump. The weird little killer Yamada is fucking hilarious.

I got Akira on VHS from my local Pharm store for 1.99 from the discount bin. That is still seriously one of the most mind-blowingly good movies I've ever watched. Even if you think the plot is convoluted, just the animation is enough to make you love it. Too bad my copy is a really shitty dub, but it didn't hurt it too much. It's always nice hearing awkward stilted speech during the most important dialogue of the movie.

    Same here.

  7. just watched Kung Fu Hustle (Gong Fu) Stephen Chao's latest.
i found it to be quite different than his last trio of self directed movies,
requisite humour segments were included of course, but there was a darker
and serious edge to a lot of the moments. The Kung Fu was administered and
performed by a variety of veterans as listed in this interesting article:

    http://www.star-ecentral.com/news/st...399&sec=movies

all very impressive, but (what some purists may not like) is that the kung fu gets more and more outlandish (superpowers) and CG based, but thats sort of the point as it illustrates the down to earth and eccentric elements of Kung Fu Cinema.

  8. Ok watched 3 movies this week in the breaks between work and WOW:

Assault on Precinct 13 remake - cool, gritty, stylish, violent. All that and a bag of chips.

Cellular - Was surprisingly good. I liked William H. Macy in it quier alot, Jason Staham made a cool evil baddie, it surprisingly had some good funny moments, and it was tense in the right spots. Definate recomendation.

Catwooman - I knew it was bad, but I wanted to see how bad it is. And let me tell you - it was horrible.

  9. also, Fighter In the Wind,
a very loose biopic about Masutatsu Oyama, Korean
emmigrant, taking resident in a Japanese mountain to
train in the cold for 2 years so he could come back and
beat the crap out of every opponent he challenged.
declared by the New York Times in 1961 to be the toughtest man in the
world, Mas Oyama (or as he liked to be called Choi Baedal)
was so strong, that most of his fights would end in 3 minutes or less,
some resulting in single strike takedowns. He is known for strong punches
and kicks to the head, as straightforward as that may be. He
also is famous for wrestling bulls barehanded and chopping of their
horns with knife handed chops. If the movie had taken a realisitic and
more documentaric (word?) approach, it might have been cooler/
it went for heavy melodrama (i.e. love interest, arch enemy)
as it is, the movie was well shot, well made, and definitely gave you
the impression that Mas Oyama was one strong mofo. the various
fights with different martial arts experts are cut a bit quickly but all
of them are very nice to watch, never giving the impression the actors
on screen didnt know what they were doing. anyway, take it in if you
    can its a fun film.

for people interested in the real Mas Oyama, this link has some videos you
    might find fun to watch.
