Thread: Building a PC ****1/17 - problem. help me.

I'd recommend an AMD Athlon instead of a Pentium. Most people that make their own comps have been using them for years, myself included.

I'd go for the ASUS board and for 1GB of RAM. It's not overkill at all.

EDIT: Also, keep checking Sundays for deals at retail outlets. Chances are you'll be able to get a 120GB HD for the price of an 80GB one. I know I did.
HA! HA! I AM USING THE INTERNET!!1

Have you looked at Turtle Beach cards? Those are nice too, and cheaper.

    Seagate 80GB SATA w/8MB buffer $86
For $40 more, you can get 40 more GB in a 120GB Western Digital drive. Might as well do it now while drives are dirt cheap.

    Pioneer DVD $39
    Lite-On.

    Win XP home $91
Find a student and go to Provantage. Buy Pro Upgrade (you've probably got some old Windows discs laying around, use those) for $76. Home edition is suck.

I'm pretty happy, this thing should fly. Just curious about the benefits of using the Asus P4C800E Deluxe MoBo($180) instead of the Intel. Primary benefit would be overclocking ability, anything else?
    Less money for Intel.

  3. i wish i knew a student. Last year while i was still in school i bought XP pro through them for $45. I should bug some of the people i still know there, but all my close friends graduated

  4. ASUS boards are incredibly reliable, and packed with features. I swear by them, myself.

*Personally*, I prefer Intel chips over AMD chips.

I got a burned copy from my friend.

    It was free.

And I woiuld get the gig of RAM. RAM is super-cheap, and you might not need it for games now, but I bet you will by May or June. It's easier just to get it now and get it over with. You can never have too much RAM.

  7. i thought the copy protection was too good to just copy an XP disk... ?

  8. Umm I dunno, it was a copy of a copy or something.

  9. Could have downloaded/burned it.

People who pay for windows are idiots

and by idiots... i mean they have integrity

  10. there are cracked copies of XP (not beta) out there?

not that i would do anything with that information....
