nope, not sure if you're implying that i over or under estimate his ability, but the numbers are all right here so it's easy to see what kind of player he was. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/cards/rosepe01.shtml

We'll start with what i identify as Rose's last good year, 1979, when he was 38. He then played for 8 more years, mostly in a more limited role. Here are his OPS numbers:

    79 - .848
    80 - .706
    81 - .781
    82 - .683
    83 - .612
    84 - .695
    85 - .714
    86 - .586

Almost all are below league averages. The Reds would have been better off giving thier young talent the ABs so they could develop as hitters, not to Pete Rose while he withers away and refuses to leave. Rose was never really great, but he was very good for a long time. Mostly in his 20s and early 30s. He should have retired around 40.

Only if you go back in time and pay attention to Rose's playing in the early 80's.

  6. OPS!? Never seen that on the back of a baseball card. I'd like to see you hit .200 when you're 44. Fans want to see their over-the-hill heroes just as much as if not more than some no-name minor leaguer who might not last more than 5 years.

I will come clean here... I am and have been a huge Pete Rose fan going back to 1983, when I was 8. So from 1983-88 or so, I collected 23/26 of his regular season Topps cards (surprisingly got another for Christmas this year, too, so I'm missing only 2). After buying and reading through his denial book in '89, I never totally believed or disbelieved him. I just liked him for his enthusiasm and pursuit of being the best he could be on-the-field. Even now, I don't feel betrayed in any way by his actions off-the-field. That's his business, not mine. The people who I feel have offended and betrayed me does not include Rose; they are the commissioner's office (for ignoring hundreds of thousands of fans by continuing to ban him) and naysayers like the guy posting here (for verbally trashing what was a spectacular 24-year career).

Banning one guy at the fans' expense isn't going to solve baseball's real problems: (1) huge economic disparity between ballclubs, (2) lack of mandatory and random drug testing, and (3) $0.25 billion contracts (Rose is selfish!? ha!).

And no. No matter how much money they spend, the Red Sox will never win the World Series again. Negativity breeds negativity.

  7. I'm assuming it's a lot like the current Derek Jeter myths? (that he is a good shortstop and a good hitter. It's not in the numbers, you gotta see him play! )

There's only one of those, and every indication is that there won't be another for a long, long, long time. A-Rod's tenure in Texas has been a disaster so far and will only get worse.

And it's not about banning Pete Rose to solve problems, its about banning Pete Rose because he's a greedy fuck, a person who put $$$ above the game he supposedly loved back in 1987, and it's something he continues to do to this very day.

Like I said, you may love Pete Rose, but you're just another shill, another pawn in his game to get a big shiny plaque up in Cooperstown. It's time for you to realize what's going on.

What kind of person would Pete Rose be if he wasn't trying to get a big shiny plaque up in Cooperstown? No shit he's trying to get in. He had over 4000 hits and he deserves it.

it's there now. It's on base % + Slugging %, and is a more effective tool for evaluating players than batting average. There are actually a whole bunch of even more complicated stats that all offer some really cool insights.

even if i could it wouldn't mean that i should be playing major league baseball.

I'm just stating facts, sorry that the facts offend you. I love Nomar Garciappara, but i'll readily admit that he hasn't been the same since he had wrist surgery. It's just a fact of the game, people get hurt or get old and thier performance slowly slips until they retire. I'm not trashing Rose's career, he had a brilliant 18 year career, he just didn't know when to walk away.

We have rules and punishments so people don't gamble, that's why it's not a major problem. I'd rather keep it that way.

I'm not negative. Sox are gonna win!!!!!
