This show is fucking awesome.

I had no idea Gonzo did this, though a part of me thinks I knew it at one point. After watching what I have of this and all of Samurai 7, I'm almost ashamed to still be buying Gonzo DVDs when they've fallen so far. Speed Grapher, Basalisk and Solty Rei were ok, but they don't compare to the earlier two at all and Trinity Blood was just a piece of shit.

Last Exile benefited from the soundtrack being awesome and the character/ship/setting/clothes design from Range Murata.

If you can find it around, Opaque, one of Gonzo's earlier works was Vandread. It may look slightly dated by now, but I remember really liking it. They really know how to animate and tell a compelling story.

Is this as good as I remember it being?

It drags a lot needlessly in the middle. So much that I can't actually remember most of it. The beginning and last 6 episodes are great though.
