Thread: Stuff and Maxim and FHM and all of the magazines liike that suck

  1. While I agree with diffusionx on everything, I always thought it was all pretty obvious--never picked up an issue myself. It's like Seventeen magazine, for highschool boys.

Look inside. The magazine's actually totally decent, I suspect they just make the covers like that because they want to appeal to the same people who buy Maxim and Stuff. The articles are solid, the reviews are good, and Ive discovered a handful of great artists from reading. They have had some really cool articles too, one of them had a bunch of musicians draw pictures and they had someone analyze them. Good stuff.

Plus they dont add any non-music articles to try to make themselves look credible and important, a la Rolling Stone, which ends up putting out a bunch of retarded Bush-bashing articles, anyway (Ted Kennedy writing an article on Bush's environmental policies, who wants to guess how that turned out?). It's just about the music.

Oh, and anyone who is thinking about doing drugs should just pick up the 12/03 issue of Blender (Christina) and flip to page 36. That'll set you straight.

And Source doesn't appeal to me one bit.

  3. I havent read Spin or Rolling Stone since I was a teenager so I dont know, in regards to Blender, I just cant fuck with the whole SpikeTV/WWE/Maxim movement (Blender just an extension of that garbage, for Chris sake they gave brinteys album like 4 stars or something)...i rather buy Mass Appeal, While You Were Sleeping or Life Sucks Die, some gnarly shit that combines punk rock and hip hop. I've given up on any commercial magaiznes (Source included).

  4. They gave In The Zone 3 stars, actually.

    "good in its genre".

And if you still dont like that score (I really dont either), they gave the newest Bon Jovi one star.

The magazine grew on me, oh well. I just brought it up as a point that even poop has a silver lining. Blender is by far better than Maxim and Stuff because there's actual content and decent writing in there. That's all I was trying to say. If Maxim's editors didn't spend a month figuring out what crap to throw on the wall to fill in the pages between the airbrushes and actually try something cohesive, it could probably be pretty decent.

But Maxim's like, the most popular magazine EVER so they're not gonna change their formula.

And honestly, all the content? It's worthless,
Sounds like you're ready to move out of the frat. Which means it's time to
    upgrade the periodical reading material.

  6. I do want to subscribe to GQ, actually.

I put an APB out to bandit in his thread a fortnight ago, no response yet though.

You are raising their subscription total and therefore supplying them with more advertisements and money. Good job.

  9. I think Stuff is funny. It's better than Maxim. I will readily admit that i like retarded humor, substance is boring. I don't read it because of the girls, they're all vapid and have nothing to say, but i don't mind that it's there. I just use it for bathroom reading.

I don't think these magazines are any more vapid than a lot of the other things out there that i bet you do enjoy. Lots of TV shows and video games are just as trite. What redeeming qualities does Halflife really have? It's all just entertainment, and it doesn't pretend to be anything but.
