Thread: Encoding WMA

  1. But there's a difference.

The War Measures Act was invoked because a bunch of seperatist hooligans in Quebec were blowing shit up and killing politicians.

Windows Media Audio was invoked because Bill Gates simply wants to control everything you do on your computer.

Does AAC sound better than MP3?

The best way to encode MP3s is using Exact Audio Copy to rip, and using lame 3.90.3 to encode at --alt-preset standard. --aps is VBR, and it averages around 200 kbps. If you want higher quality, use --alt-preset extreme, which averages around 260 kbps. Unless you have really nice speakers or headphones, they are usually indistinguishable in blind listening tests.

Otherwise, you could use MPC, which is a native variable bitrate format at -q6, which sounds very nice, or FLAC for lossless rips.

AAC beats mp3 at lower bitrates, but it gets hard to determine which format is the best at high bitrates. AAC is used for 1 CD XviD rips and 10 GB iPods, mostly.

  4. I re-ripped all my CDs into AAC when iTunes was released for Windows, at the same 160 bitrate as my previous MP3s.

With my shitbox computer speakers, which I have to keep at a low volume or the oversensitive jackasses I live with freak out (hell, they play music 10x louder than I do...), there's not much of a difference. But with headphones on, I noticed that the AAC files were alot more clear than the MP3s.

For those unfamilliar with AAC (Advanced Audio Codec), it's a layer of the MPEG-4 video standard, just as MP3 is a layer of the MPEG-2 video standard.
