I have all my old Destros sitting loose right next to my computer here. I honestly dont even buy toys. The lone exception was the 25th Joe ones. I picked a select 8 or so of my old favorites and I got them hanging in my gameroom. The main selling point to me was seeing the original artwork used next to the figure. Once I saw that shit I had to have it and its why theyre still in the box. The only one left I want is Scrap-Iron and lucky for me its actually coming out. ...Maybe a Lowlight too
Ok just checked - I got Destro (silver + gold head), Snakeeyes V1,V2, Firefly, BAT, Beachhead, Stormshadow, Spirit, and a Viper. Those figures are just too damn cool. I had to have them when I saw'em.

It's not a lame excuse at all. The only substance the source material really has is in the minds of people feeling childhood nostalgia for it. And you know what? That's okay. We loved the animated Transformers movie as kids. Some of us still do. Guess what? Objectively, it's a giant pile of shit. Doesn't matter to kids. I'm sure the Bay Transformers movies are having the same effect on some kids of the appropriate age today.
The fact of the matter is simple: it's not for you. That's all there is to it. I understand what you're asking for, but if you'd like an intelligent, well-told story about giant robots, please look to another franchise. No one ever got one from Transformers before, so why should they expect one now? It doesn't need to be any more than what it is to be massively profitable and you're crazy if you think the people making these movies are concerned with anything else. Hell, they'd be crazy if they were too.
Its concept has as much substance as about any science fiction out there. It is a show about self aware machines that have learned how to control their own shape. That basis is just as strong as any other scifi.
Objectively, the only thing wrong with the original TFAM (other than little things like OMG why does something flying in space need to get rid of weight?) is that it has almost zero character development. All internal struggle last only seconds and it can only be seen in reaction shots of characters faces. No one talks about what they are thinking or feeling.
Personally I find that interesting, but I can see why others would say that makes it a bad movie. A realize that character development and struggle, both internal and external are considered major parts of good story telling from an academic standpoint.
And there is a clear difference between the old movie and new. The Old movie gave a bunch of kids what they already liked x 10. This movie is made of visual masturbation and then tacked a name on it to make some more money. Its the difference between making money off fans by giving them what they want, and making money off of them by misleading them about what you are really offering.
Finally, have you ever read any of the comics? Optimus dealt with the concept of good and death a lot. Grimlock thought about the idea of being "bad" a lot. There were mature themes there. There is potential for good story telling with these characters.
I don't really understand why people are saying this. Yeah it is true, I guess. At its core, bay didn't care about making a movie that 20+ year olds would love. But why point it out? There are so many movies that people do not like, and yet it seems that only this movie gets the "it is not for you" response. Hell, why not apply it to Video games? Why does anyone argue with Joust or Yoshi anymore? Why don't people just tell Yoshi "handhelds aren't for you" when he bitches about the DS?
besides, if this shit really is for kids, then they are still bad. They have shit like robots saying bitch and humping dogs legs. They are full of the kind of humor that you see in bad B movies for 20 somethings.
I think I'm justified in not liking the movie and not liking that it was made. If we can make pretty good movies about men dressed as bats and wizards playing soccer on brooms fighting snake wizards, then we can make a likable movie about intelligent robots. I'm not asking for Shakespeare. I'd be ok with something as good as the first TMNT movie.

No it doesn't. This is like saying Bud Light is as flavorful and complex as those faggot import beers.
Because it usually doesn't have to be pointed out. There are so many movies that people do not like, and yet it seems that only this movie gets the "it is not for you" response.
It is applied to video games, often aptly! Look at every rebuttal YellerDog has ever leveled against Yoshi and Joust in the Nintendo threads for starters....the "it is not for you" response. Hell, why not apply it to Video games? Why does anyone argue with Joust or Yoshi anymore?
If I expected this out of every movie, then I would have been disappointed with precisely every movie ever made since the first TMNT movie.I'd be ok with something as good as the first TMNT movie.
