Thread: Mythica MMORPG Cancelled By Microsoft

  1. Mythica MMORPG Cancelled By Microsoft

  2. I read about this one a while ago, sounded cool because it was supposed to be very story-driven.

They wanted to make an MMORPG that let you feel like you were as important a character as you would be in any offline RPG... which is a cool thing to work for I think.

But... it's not World of Warcraft so in the end, I don't really care about the title. Bummer for the employees though.

  3. ""after careful evaluation of the MMORPG landscape, MGS has decided to stream-line its portfolio, making fewer investments in this genre."

Translation: This game sucked compared to everything else already out there and coming out, so we cut it.

We're probably lucky that we didnt get a bomb. Hopefully the people getting the ax will get good jobs soon, I wish the best of luck to them.
    A is for action

  4. "MGS has decided to stream-line its portfolio"

I sure hope they did. Some of their Xbox stuff is incomprehensibly bad. OK, not that ba...never mind.

You're asking for a game that can not exist in an MMORPG context since essentially you have thousands of people all wanting to be the main or just an important character. To do that you'd have to make a thousand stories and that level of effort into a single game is completely insane.

Not at all, you're thinking solely of the traditional MMORPG mission-style of doing things. It could be done with the game custom tailoring the telling of stories to each individual person. The persistant for everyone part is altered a bit since that would mean you could still reach and fight "bosses" after other people already have for themselves (which could present problems in chosen party members), but it could be done and workarounds could be found for most of the problems. Sorta like what Blizzard is currently doing with WoW.

And that's why it was exciting. Thanks for pointing that out though

That would have NEVER worked. Unless you can code a translator that turns 'cry mor noob' into 'Do not despair young one, for oft are we tried in the troublesome times."
    o_O

I'm a little confused by what you're saying here. Doesn't this just make it an offline game that you happen to be playing online? How would this make it different from a normal offline rpg?

  10. FFXI does things like that, it works just fine. You advance through missions (which offer most of the game's story) at your own pace, and you get cutscenes that make it seem like you're the hero. It's pretty basic compared to what Mythica planned and yes, also what World of Warcraft is doing, but it's a nice touch and definitely increases my enjoyment of the genre.

Being a hero but doing it with friends and existing in a very well fleshed out online persistent world is quite enjoyable.
