    Just Breed

    Gamespy's mini write up.

RPGs were never well-represented on the NES, and many of the ones we did get were, paradoxically, rather middling fare when compared to the best games available in Japan. Enix's Just Breed is an example of a killer RPG that didn't make it to the States: Just looking over screenshots of the game probably would have sent me into paroxysms of despair and desire at the time. The game's elaborate scenario and gameplay systems compete favorably with 16-bit games of the time. I'm particularly enamored of the art by Yuzo Takada, of Blue Seed and 3 x 3 Eyes fame. He handled both the character designs and enemy graphics, and Enix packed the cartridge with a boosted sound chip to contribute truly excellent in-game tunes to complement them. The game's scenario follows the stories of multiple characters, and the battle system is a light-strategy mix that looks better and plays more simply than Nintendo's own Fire Emblem games. It's a game for RPG diehards like myself to seek out.

    Nekketsu Oyako

    The translation site's info:
Nekketsu Oyako is one of the few 2D side-scrolling, Final Fight-style beat-em-ups to be released on post-16 bit consoles - made by Tecnosoft (best known for the Thunderforce series, no relation to Technos) for the Playstation and Saturn in 1994, it was one of the first Japanese PSX games, but really looks more like an SNES (or maybe Neo-Geo) title. Not that that's a bad thing. Anyways, as far as Final Fight clones go, this is one of the better ones, and it doesn't seem take itself too seriously, considering the boxing octopi and whatnot.

Everything was uncompressed and pretty easy to hack once I knew what I was doing - all of the text is translated, except for the "Nekketsu Oyako" kanji displayed before the title, which I intentionally left alone. The translated game has been tested to the end in ePSXe v1.6.0, and nearly to the end on a real PlayStation (with PS-X-Change 2 disc and spring thingy), and worked perfectly in both cases.

Yeah, these ones seem hard to get.

    I think you just did.

  5. Wow, slick. I've always wanted to play Nekketsu Oyako. I'm a sucker for early Japanese PS games... I want to see Crime Crackers next so I finally know what the fuck I'm doing!
