There is a difference between taking a concept from another country and taking material from another country.Originally Posted by burgundy
Japan has no problem taking an idea, and improving on it over and over again. They, generally as a society, aren't going to import things, even when cheaper.
When they discovered it was cheaper to buy rice made in America or other countries, they continued to buy Japanese rice. It does not matter if it's a cheaper/better product, 9 times out of 10 something made in Japan is going to sell while the imports fail (barring movies).
Sounds like a cultural attitude to me.
Japanese are starting to open up more and more I think. Although the people in the government are especially slow to change, and the tensions between Chinese and Koreans is very high (RE: a lot of racism against these two groups). As for Japanese xenophobic attitudes applying towards so-called "intellectual" property, I strongly disagree that they are not open to accepting them. Things such as American movies, music, games, and computer software are very common. When it comes to physical products though, I do agree that Japan still has a negative attitude towards imports. Although, as more jobs are shipped to China from large Japanese firms such as Sanyo, Sony, Toyota, etc. these attitudes the Japanese have towards the rest of the world is beginning to change rapidly.
"The only way microsoft would make something that doesn't suck is if they made vacuums"
When you make an average of 7 movies a year, you pretty much have to import movies.
Videogames /= movies.
What percentage of Games get imported to Japan? 3%? Maybe?
They must export at least 60% of the games produced over here.
The willingness to use Chinese Slave Labor is hardly a mark of racist/xenophobic cultural undertones going away.
More like let's make Wei Yu build transistors for 3 cents an hour while he's serving that life sentence for speaking out against the government.
Some people assume that collectors don't enjoy the games as much as non-collectors, this is a very ignorant thing to assume, and quite offensive, some do, some don't. It's like saying, "it doesn't matter what a person looks like on the outside, it's the inside that counts", but what if a person is fucking ugly and a nasty piece of work or if a person is 'andsome and a really mint person too. Crap example. Furthermore if you asked someone that claims not to care about their games collection being complete and then offered them a magic wand to make them so, I bet they would (ask yourself). Just, time money and care is the difference. Ask any really fat person if they could be thin by magic and I think I know what they would select in reality regardless what they might say otherwise. Crap example 2. Just jealousy or genuine care for the game medium.
Some people don't just collect games that other people think are rare either. Again basic minded people just assume this and it annoys me. Some people were playing Little Ralph, Harmful Park and Toaplan Shooting before the masses on ebay had even heard of them. Rare or not, they don't give a toss, makes no difference to them as they have them and won't sell them and play them.
