Thread: The Taxation Thread

  1. Filing for bankruptcy is one of the stupidest things you could do. If I ever fell into serious debt I'd just restructure it, you have many options. I would sooner take a criminal record than file for bankruptcy.

  2. If your income is below a certain amount, you can do your federal taxes for free by checking here. I used H&R Block again for federal, and the totally free gov site offered by my state for the rest, which is as it should be.

Filing electronically gets your return fast, and even faster if you let 'em direct deposit to your checking account. I'm glad I got the hang of it and left pen and paper. But still, if my income is too high for any of the private filing companies, I'm forced to go back to it rather than pay $20 or whatever. The cost of a stamp and a little annoyance with paper beats a $20. Don't usually care about a longer wait.

  3. We didn't have much of a choice. It isn't that our income is shoddy, hell, my father's a doctor. We don't qualify for shit when it comes to government help and all those nice free things. Our family has so much debt, and there's no way to get out of it right now. And to me, I grew tired of four banks and two credit associations calling out house literally thirty times a day.

This will at least makes things a tad easier, for now.

  4. I can sympathize with Nomi. I can see why filing for bankruptcy can be as bad as a criminal record though. Your credit rating is shot to hell. It's hard to get credit after that. To put things in perspective I used to be part of a BMG music club (you know 12 CDs for a penny) back when I was a sophomore in highschool. I didn't realize taht tehy would send you stuff you didn't want and charge you for it. I refused to pay for the crap they sent me AND they wouldn't accept my shipping it back to them. I received notices from collection agencies that threatened to ruin my credit rating which really pissed me off--I was like 14! The matter was settled when I cancelled my membership (and they had the gall to send me renewal packets) but flash forward to getting my own credit cards and such in college and that information is still in my credit report--failure to pay and some nonsense for 2 CDs.

It's not that bad. It's very common in this country, and it's only on your credit for 5 years (or is it 7? It's not permanent whatever it is). No doubt it is quite bad, and you should avoid it at all costs, but I'd rather go bankrupt than have a criminal record.

  6. Lucky for me my Mom used to work for H&R Block. She does my taxes for me every year. Getting back about $400 this year from federal, that's better than nothing.

You can rebuild your credit after filing for bankruptcy. It takes time but it's not impossible at all. Usually it starts with getting a secured credit card and making sure you pay it off on time, and eventually someone will offer you a regular card again and you just go up from there.
