it's really easy to swap the dvd drive out- just like doing it on a cpu (it doesn't require a mod chip or anything). i think ebay prices are kinda high for xbox drives, but look around and you can probably find one for a reasonable price
early adoptions sucks. i'm stuck with a shitty thomson dvd drive in my xbox, and it's just starting to give me trouble. nothing major, but i get recurring freezes in certain games. a few dirty disc errors, too.
i'd love to just replace the machine, but then i'd lose my hard drive. so i guess i have to send it to microsoft.
does anyone know
a) if i need to be under a warantee to do so
b) how long the process takes
c) how much it costs (including shipping)
ps - i'm not interested in modding my xbox with a new hard drive.

I've got an Xbox with a faulty power supply. (It cuts completely out after maybe 15min of use. No error lights.)
I dissected it, now I've gotta find a replacement PSU.
My thompson drive has recently bit the bullet, and the samsungs are expensive, anyone know if the phillips drives are decent? I dont want another thompson.

For 100 dollars, you can ship it to Microsoft to fix, and they'll give you a 1-year warranty to boot.
thats insane that theyre charging that much for a fucking dvd drive
I bid on a Phillips drive for 40 bucks, probably get outbid, if that happens I might just buy a new laser for the thompson, sigh.
Epmode, if you're out of warranty and dont feel like spending 100 to get it fixed or 150 to buy a new one, this is great site that tells you how to install a new drive, new laser, or just clean the drive you have.

i have a phillips drive in my xbox, which I've had 6 months after launch or so, and have had no problems at all. People say the samsung are the best, but the phillips are also very good.
