Thread: Standardized Testing

  1. I don't remember the split, but my SAT was 1190. I did better on the math end.

The verbal is such a dumb test, though, if you think about it. A better test of someone's ability to learn and to retain knowledge is what you get in actual classrooms. You have a course of study, you take notes or whatever, you learn your stuff, and then you take a test on the stuff you studied. Preparation for the verbal is going through the dictionary and studying each word, and then using applied SHORT TERM knowledge for the reading comprehension thing. What the hell use does short term knowledge have in the workplace? Everything in my job is long term knowledge and an understanding of underlying concepts, not, "Here's a short story. Read it and then answer several detailed questions about it." Meh. Maybe if I'd done better on the damned thing I might not care so much.

  2. The SAT is a self serving entity. It represents the usless part of education/life that you will have to deal with. Those who still have yet to take it I give this advice. Prepare well for it like anything else. Afterward, forget about it. That is your best reward for completing it.

  3. I got a 1040...when I was 11.

I got in the 1400s when I took it for real, with a 790 in verbal. I stayed up all night playing FFVI, though - I got to the World of Ruin that night. Since I got a 790 on math on the PSAT, I have no doubt I could have done better.

God I love standardized testing. I just wish more things in life depended on them.

And to everyone who likes to bitch about these tests...I'm smarter than you.

  4. My one strong talent seems to be my ability to do well on multiple choice tests, so I got a 1430 on my SAT without studying at all.

So damned early, and I've got to go take the act in 20 minutes. As much as I love owning standardized tests, i'd rather take the damn thing at noon.

Fucking sweet. Only school I know of that requires 32+ is MIT. No MIT for me. I've heard that 30+ is like 1400+ on the SATs. This is awesome because I'm applying to BCE (boston college summer program--some girl asked me to go with her; and I can't refuse 6 weeks with no parents.) and they ask for the ACT scores.

If you want into MIT, go to another nice tech school and make All A's for a year. They should let you in then. At leat, that works for most schools who won't take you because of low ACT scores.

    Interesting, I also took the SATs when I was 11. I scored a 1010. :(

But that was back when the SATs we're much harder.

Amen, my elitist brother. I completely agree.
