Thread: Myst IV Revelation!

  1. Nah Mzo iz probably an arze.

Ya mother has good taste btw

  2. I am very interested, but I was really hoping it would go full 3D. The direction they went with Exile and now IV is better, but not enough. I understand the technology isn't nearly there yet to do photo-realistic full 3D, but I feel it would look good enough to be be just as engrossing in 3D, as the past titles were in photo-realistic 2D.

there's been a scant few things on this board that have made me laugh out loud. that was one of them.

    Mzo is (probably) right.
And there's my theory come to life for why most people on this board and in the gaming media bash on Myst -- 'cause their parents know what it is and may have even played it. That's quite alright; hate away, doesn't bother me.

What I absolutely can't stand though is when critics lay into the series for being illogical. Anyone who has played their share of adventure games over the years has run into the illogical bad apples. Myst is so not one of them. Every Myst game can be finished without a walkthrough if you just pay attention and use your head.

  4. I love Myst. I've said this many, many times. I was extremely disappointed to hear that the online component to URU had been scrapped, but if this is what we're getting in return, I can live with it.

OK, here's the skinny: I never really played Myst. I tried my first year of college, and the horrid Quicktime version 1.243423545 it installed exploded my '98 machine and I hated Myst ever since.

Someone find me a version of the original Myst that works in XP and I will gladly play through it and give impressions.

  6. That looks nice.

I always meant to pick up the last one for Xbox, but never got around to it.

    Was it any good?

Interesting theory, might be true for some cases. Not this one. Years ago, my mom used to play a ton of games on NES and SNES. Hell, she was the first one in the household to beat SMB when we got it. I haven't turned on any of those games years later. Lately though, all she can seem to keep up with are games like Myst and such. She shies away from anything that requires reflexes of any kind. I don't know why that is.

I trash Myst because it bored me. Not because it's not "hardcore" enough, not because my parents recognize it and enjoy it, but because I found it to be a dull experience and I didn't like the sequel any better. And yes, I went back and tried to give the original game another shot, and I couldn't do it. If I could get a copy of RealMyst for OS X, if such a thing even exists, I might try it again. But I didn't enjoy the original Myst then, and I think it'd take a lot to get me interested in the series, at least, in the games.

I did enjoy the novels. That's about all I can say.

You have a DVD-ROM drive? Myst through Exile are available in a single collection for DVD-ROM. It'll cost you around $40.

    Get to lookin'!

The thing is, if you haven't found the idea of Myst (pretty, pretty scenery; lots of mechanical puzzles; no action whatsoever, just lots of thinking) intriguing enough to find a way to play it by now, it's probably not your thing. Same goes for Grave who tried it and wasn't feeling it. Not every game is for everyone. One man's "boring" is another man's "slow-paced, fascinating, thought-provoking, and immersive". Track down realMYST though if you're serious. This is the updated 3D-engine version of the first game with one new Age. In 1600x1200, this thing is *gorgeous*.

And that DVD pack should only be $20, maybe less. I got it free when I bought URU. From what I read though the original Myst is a bitch to get running on XP.

The novels were indeed excellent. Just awesome fantasy books through and through. Seeing as how they arose from a videogame, I bet I wasn't the only one caught by surprise at their quality.
