Thread: My Friend's XP "Sprocket Error"

  1. My Friend's XP "Sprocket Error"

    My friend recently (stupidly :P) reduced his computer's security level to low and seems to have caught a virus or somesuch. Every time he tries to access the internet on his computer, he gets a "sprocket error", whatever that should mean. He can't reset his IP, either. He doesn't want to resort to reformatting his computer...

    sprocket? Do you mean socket by any chance? Can you give any other information? What type of internet access does he have? Any firewalls?

    What happens if...

    1) start -> run -> "cmd"
    2) in the window that pops up, type "ipconfig", copy and paste the info here
    3) type "ipconfig/release"
    4) then type "ipconfig/renew" (this may take up to a few minutes)

    anything odd happen? You should end up with a new ip address, or the same one you had before. Depends on how things are set up. And finally, what happens if...

    5) type "ping www.google.com"

    if that fails, does this?

    6) "ping 64.233.167.99"

  3. Must have been sabotaged by malware from Cogswell Cogs.

  4. Joe, it's my opinion that he has no idea what he's talking about.
