I played the demo that came with OXM. It seemed pretty good. Seemed worth $29.99 to me. The demo even had an online mode. I can see the game getting good-great reviews.
Its a fun game and it looks real nice. However the sense of speed it gives off makes PGR2 feel like Wipeout. The damage detail is great, hit the back right tail light and only that wil shatter, bumbers, spoilers can be knocked off. If your using the in car view and you hit something head on your windshield will shatter or it will just crack, which makes things really interesting.
Hmm, it has actual online play? Interesting. I thought the original was pretty weak, but the PC demo of this seemed better. Looking forward to impressions.
I'm about 14% into the season mode and so far, it's pretty good.
The cars do feel a bit 'floaty' and the sensation of speed isn't as fast as other games, chalk that up to Simulation. I have yet to really mess with the settings and adjust things (I think there are 5 categories of that, as well as 5 categories of car damage), so perhaps that will fix some of the feel later.
The tracks are all real world so you've got Laguna Seca and others, as well as multiple styles of racing (NASCAR, Rally, Road).
I'm getting a real GTA feel off this one, it doesn't do any one thing exceptionally well, but there is a lot of variety and it's all pretty good. I'll probably do a lot of NASCAR racing (again, up to 12 people online), since that's something no other game I have does.
Controls: Fully adjustable and remapable, brake and gas are pressure sensitive, so holding the brakes in hard will lock up the wheels, and slamming the gas will spin you out.
Graphics: 60 FPS, not bad at all. Tracks look good but some might think the cardboard crowds are a bit bland.
Main mode is like a Career mode, you are a rookie driver and need to get 1st or 2nd in 1-4 (so far) segments or races.
AI: Amazingly good on straightaways, and horrible in turns. You can pass upwards of 5 cars if the turn is sharp enough. Usually 12-20 AI cars during races.
Cars: You generally get 2 choices when you get to a new class, so right now I can do 3 races with NASCAR cars or 3 races with open wheeled F1 style cars.
Gripes:
No rear view mirror, and the 3rd car view isn't too good, it's not high enough and obscures the track (Low bumper cam, Hood Cam, In Car Cam, 3rd Car Cam).
Difficulty, touch and go and e-brake seems entirely useless.
I'll put some time into Online tomorrow and see how that goes.
Damage areas: Steering, Tires, Suspension, Gears, Engine. Depending on the crash you'll get some damage to these (Icon's for each light up Yellow for Damaged, Red for B0rken.) F1 cars are by far the trickiest, open wheel means you rub someone you are going down, and they are easiest to pop off tires and reduce you to Rim Driving.
