can someone elplain the communities to me? All they seem to do is rate chicks, and they either let them in or tell them they're ugly, but then what do they do? Is there actually some reason for being there, like a chat or board for members only?

Those are rating communities, which seem to make up over 90% of all the communities on LJ. Once they get "oked" or "approved," they are allowed to post an image in their info. that says just that. Amazing, isn't it? They are most commonly frequented by young teenage girls looking for acceptance from their peers. As far as I know, there is no other reason for them.
