Thread: Doom III (Xbox) Official Thread

  1. Doom III (Xbox) Official Thread

Should be a bunch of new information (and hopefully an Xbox playable demo!) at E3, so what the hell - let this be the place for new information regarding the Xbox version of Doom III.

There was an article posted on Eurogamer a couple days ago (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=55312) that claims to confirm no split-screen content in the XB version - all multiplayer will be on Xbox Live, including the exclusive co-op mode. No mention of system-link, but seems like a good bet.

Following yesterday's revelation that Doom III would be playable co-operatively over Xbox Live, our sources at Activision's Californian press event have confirmed that there will be no split-screen options in Vicarious Visions' forthcoming Xbox adaptation, and shed some light on other aspects of the presentation.
John Carmack is quoted as saying the game is "really close" to shipping.

The XB version is being handled by Vicarious Visions, who plans to ship very close to the PC release. They've found a couple backdoor hacks on the Xbox allowing them to cut corners in the rendering process without losing much resolution or detail, and have also said they're using a context-sensitive control scheme for the thumbsticks. Oh, they also say Doom III pushes the Xbox to the limit.

Anyways, the game's supposed to ship "when it's finished" but common theory is September/October 2004.

Of course, the XB version won't look as good as the PC, won't control as well, etc etc, but it still looks and sounds stunning, and I can't wait to play it. I'm betting it will be a very very nice Live experience as well.

  2. Definitely looks slick. Looks like I need to upgrade my RAM this summer..

  3. I prefer console controls to PC controls, so whatever...

The game looks insanely nice. I am bummed a bit that there isn't going to be a split-screen option, especially for co-op, but I'll live. It's one of the first games I'll put my hands on when I get onto the show floor in LA, while the rest of you are at home like suckers!

  4. Gamespot just put up some screenshots of the Xbox version.

  5. Online co-op is typically a great feature. I like playing games while reclining in front of a television anyway, but damn if that [no co-op] isn't a bit of a slap to the PC community. Fall '04 is looking to be a real wallet-buster.

I played through Doom and Doom 2 in co-op mode back when they were released. It was great.

More FPSs need a co-op mode.

  7. there WILL be co-op.....just thru Live. the day MoH gets co-op ill be happy.

  8. a context-sensitive control scheme for the thumbsticks
That scares me. Not that I'll be picking this up for Xbox for any reason besides Live co-op and will probably wait for a price drop unless someone just gives me $50 for no reason when I'm standing in front of a copy, but still.

  9. Those shots are kinda ugly, if you ask me...

I mean, take away the lighting and you're left with something that looks worse than Quake 3.

Not the biggest graphical leap in the world.

  10. I hear ya, Mech. How Vicarious describes it sounds kind of complicated. For example, if you're in combat, the thumbsticks will slow down when targeting much like XB Halo does. If you're exploring, you'll have more freedom of movement/control sensitivity with sneaking/leaning - I suppose the idea is you won't be sneaking if you're in the middle of a firefight. They said it'll happen on the fly, and be barely noticeable by the player.

I don't think it'll be a big deal, but yeah, it is a possible concern.
