Thread: Elliott Smith's Final Album

  1. Elliott Smith's Final Album

    From Pitchfork:

Elliott Smith's final studio release is currently in the final mixing stages, with tentative plans for a fall release. In an update on Smith's official website, Gary Smith, Elliott's father, has announced that there are tentative plans for a September or October release, with more specs to follow. Smith began the album From the Basement on the Hill two years before his tragic death late last year, and many have speculated as to what would happen to the music now that he has been unable to see it through. Before his death, the album had been shopped around to various indie labels before Dreamworks came on board to release it. Whether or not Dreamworks will still be releasing Basement is unclear, as apparently the label gave the material back to Smith to release however he chose. Now, it seems, that decision is up to his family.

The 30+ songs recorded for the album were laid down at Smith's own studio, the fate of which has also been subject to speculation since his death. Initially, Smith's father had hoped to sell the studio as is to someone who would run it as Elliott had. Unfortunately, offers have either been for individual pieces of equipment, or from people who could not viably keep the studio running due to financial reasons. As a result, Smith's family has decided to sell the equipment as a complete lot and allow the purchaser to take the equipment to his/her own space. It should be noted, however, that none of Smith's instruments will be sold.
I'm happy to hear his final recordings will be released after all. It's a shame I'll never get to see him play in person, or record any new music. But his "Pretty Ugly" single that was released shortly before his death gave me alot of promise for his next album.

  2. Interesting. I've never actually heard anything by him, perhas I'll check this out.
I thought you were gay.... i guess not.

Have you heard since it's 30+ songs is it going to be a double album or will they cut the tracks they don't want. Seems like they would release all the songs. Can't wait to here it.

Actually, I had no idea before reading the article there were that many songs that had been recorded with the album in mind. I hope they release the entire set of material, even if it is a double album. Can't wait as well.

  5. How would you guys describe his music to someone who hasn't ever heard his stuff (me)?

  6. Very, very sad and melodic. Roman Candle up to Either/Or is mostly acoustic, while X/O onward is augmented with a wider array of instruments. His self titled album, Either/Or, and X/O are all about as equally good in my eyes. The earlier stuff is bleaker, but the music on X/O is lusher.

  7. folk is also another good description.

Kill Rock Stars is probably my favorite. I have figure 8 but i've probably listen to that one the least out of all the albums. If you haven't already try the Mic City Sons Heatmeiser album. Out of both the Heatmeiser albums it has the most Elliot Smith influence sound with him on more of the vocals.

  9. Yeah, Mic City is great. Kill Rock Stars is the name of the label he used to be on, not the title of any of his records.

  10. I've only heard "Needle in the hay", and thats fucking awesome. I plan on checking out some of his shit next cd run.

  11. Needle in the hay is from the self-titled blue album, the one that Brad is referring to. That is my favorite album & it is definately the one you should pick up first Arjue.

I hope all of those songs get released at once, but if his family decides to go with dreamworks, I'm sure they will put the strongest tracks on one album & then milk us later with the extra material later on.

    JM
    Hrm.

  12. I'm not sure what my favorite Elliott Smith album is, all of them have their perks. But I think it might be Either/Or, but I haven't heard much of XO or his self titled so my opinion could sway. But I would really like to get my hands on this new album.
