Thread: Things to do in America?

  1. Things to do in America?

I'm looking to hitch hike across America this summer using the money i'm getting from selling my collection and so I need ideas as to what I could be doing Here are some things i'd like to do.

-Go to Las Vegas, check out the casinos and stay in the tackiest motel I can find.
-Go to an American football game.
    -Go to an NBA game.
    -Go see some Baseball.
    -Take part in Evo 2K4.
    -See 'ground zero'.
-Live music, and lots of it.
    -Wrestling!

I would be able to think of more things but i've been up for about 2 days now. I wouldn't mind meeting people from here, if you have a couch I can crash on for a night or just want to play some games, it's all good.

  2. Hitch hike? I don't think people actually do that in America. Take a bus or something. Also, the middle 2/3rds of America is pretty boring and is not going to be worth seeing. You'd be better off picking a couple of cities and staying in hostels.

I don't know if you've been to America much, but the country is very, very large. It's larger than you think if you grew up in the UK or Europe (or even a somewhat self-contained area of the US like New England). I don't even think I had a personal sense of how large the country was until I left Connecticut for college.

New York to Chicago to Las Vegas would be good. How about Boston to New York to Chicago to the South (Memphis?) to some place in Texas to Las Vegas to Los Angeles or San Diego. That trip would give you a good sense of the country.

You want to avoid long trips through South Dakota and western West Virginia and stuff like that. The vast majority of this country is large, flat land filled with good, simple people who love Jesus. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

Also - the NBA season will be over by the time you get here and football won't have started until you've left. However, if you hit Boston (Fenway) and Chicago (Wrigley), you'll be able to catch baseball in two of the greatest places to watch any sport anywhere in the world.

  3. While you're in Vegas; BURNING MAN -_o You only live once. Who cares if you might hate everyone there / stinks.

I really recommend going all over the SW USA. Like New Mexico, Arizona and all that. Come by Houston if you can. If anything you can catch some of those sporting events here. There's always one of those going on here. Football, Basketball and Baseball. If you time it right, you can catch an Astros game against the Yankees maybe (which is rare enough in the season). Also, if you do manage to make it here we can go visit Id Software in Mesquite.

  6. Ok i'll take your word for it, hitch hiking as a last resort then.

  7. You gotta roll by New Orleans. Between the food, the history, and the Bourbon Street - you'd definitely have a hell of a time.

  8. Actually, the best way to see America would be to find a cheap, reliable van or truck in America in advance of coming here, get here, buy that vehicle, and then drive yourself. I would have someone try to find a $1,000 - $2,000 van you could sleep in and drive yourself in. Use it to go across country, and then sell it to cover the fare home. That's a more American way to see the country than taking a bus or trying to hitchhike.
