Getting a DVD to play on my PC

I just took the DVD/CD drive out of my fiancees old computer and stuck it in mine, but I can't get any DVDs to play.

Do I need some software/codecs or should it work fine in Windows Media Player?

Codecs, yes. They should be in the base Windows Media Codec pagackage on Microsoft.com somewhere.

Well, I got the codecs, but the problem is this: Certain DVDs just don't wanna load up in my drive.

IE: Shrek refuses to work at all, but Last Samurai and Wrestlemania XX work just fine.

Why is that?

Also, is there a way to get the file information for DVDs so it isn't just listed as "Unknown DVD" in media player?
