The Phantom is for real, and it just got an extreme makeover.

Infinium Labs was on hand with proof positive at the Pepcom eFocus "Cinco de Mayo" showcase in Los Angeles last night, where they unveiled the redesigned Phantom console for the first time. The sleeker-looking "Game Receiver" unit delivers downloadable games via broadband connection--no disc drives needed. For a $29.95 monthly fee, subscribers to the Phantom Gaming Service will have access to an array of on-demand game choices, though premium titles and new releases may carry an extra charge.

    The Phantom features:
    • Windows XP platform. No need for developers and publishers to incur additional costs beyond standard PC game versions.
    • Online games can be played against PC version players.
    • HDTV support and Dolby Digital surroundsound.
    • Digital Rights Management to protect against piracy while providing seamless delivery of digital content.
    • Try or rent games on demand before buying online.
    • Broad range of titles for the entire family.
    • Multiple user profiles and parental control for personalized experiences on the same Phantom receiver.

Infinium also had a "lapboard" on display, a keyboard tailored for maxium ease of use when playing PC titles from the comfort of the couch. The lapboard looked to be a well designed and inventive solution for providing a mouse-and-keyboard control scheme without the need for a desktop. The key face swivels to accomodate both left and right-handed players and to afford maximum versatility. It felt surprisingly intuitive, though no games were on hand to make possible an extensive play test.

Infinium seems to be positioning the Phantom as a sort of "video on demand" service for PC games. Time will only tell if it becomes as successful a set-top box as TiVo... Or ends up more like WebTV.

  2. so uh... where the hell do you plug in the controllers? Also did you see them running any software? or did they just show "demos" on a PC?

  3. It's all wireless homes.

That's what they've been saying all along.

  4. I like this new look alot. The keyboard also looks very cool.
