Thread: Need help making an "interactive" portfolio.

  1. www.omegagenesis.com

    This what you talking 'bout?

This is my portfolio as of now. (I'm changing it soon, but yeah it's Flash)

  2. yeah thats pretty much it. thanks for the info so far guys. any links to get started on something like that?

  3. If you know about keyframes and such you should be alright.

They have firms that do big budget Powerpoints for corporations and stuff. Its good for when a business or person wants to pitch an idea about something at a meeting.

I had a teacher at school that wanted me to make him an interactive job resumme' in flash.

powerpoint sucks because it's typical MS Office shit that assumes you've got less than two brain cells and thus tries to do everything for you. I hate Office.

  5. Forget Flash. Here's where its at: http://www.demicron.com/gallery/index.html
It is based on Java, which runs in EVERY browser and it has real time photoshop-like filter effects. It is also based on Visual development, so modifying a scene is exremely simple. It is not frame based like Flash(the bain of my existence), but it is based on interaction, you can however add a timebase so events happen in time.

It is a perfect tool for someone who wants to extend their interaction into 3D and some pretty cool 2D. As a C++ programmer it was hard for me to get into Flash because it is not structured for a programmer but rather for a scripter. It is very hard to understand connections between objects in Flash, especially if you're coding and not just throwing crap on the scene in frames. It's actually fun working in wire fusion.
I don't know how to get rid of the huge space here.

  6. Flash scripting really isn't that hard when you get into it.

  7. There's a certain mindset you must have when you get into Flash. The main thing I got out of it is this:
You can write functions in Frames and call them objects. (Counterintuitive to a programmer, even an Object oriented one)
You can call functions by jumping from timeline to timeline using keywords like parent_.(This becomes a mess when you have multiple timelines)
The flash interface is very awkward at places where you must label objects, in order to refer to them in your script.
Flash designers and Flash programmers write actionscript differently. Some coders I've seen just write the code into a single frame and just treat that as the whole program, and have graphical elements in the library as resources, to instantiate in code later.
Loading files and movies is a fucking pain in the ass.
Designers are more graphical and just throw graphics on the stage at different frames and have a layer devoted to code at different frames. This is very awkward. I probably shouldn't have said hard in the previosus post, but awkward.

Java is straightforward, you just have to understand Objects(classes, interfaces, inheritance). You cannot do macro or pointer tricks like you could in C/C++ and that makes it very consistent so that everyone could read it and understand immediately. You can also do 3D and pixel effects. Can't do those in Flash can ya.
I don't know how to get rid of the huge space here.

  8. The only advice that I can offer is that if you are making a speech during your visual presentation, do not expect the program to carry the whole thing. The visual part is supposed to support your presentation, not take it over.

  9. You don't need to know Actionscripting for what this guy wants. All of them are provided for you in the actions pallette that you'll need. Although it may get tricky because you'll probably have to have different scenes and whatnot, and fade ins, sound effects, etc.

Flash comes packed with most browsers nowadays and you can download flashplayer for FREE if you're still living in the caveman ages of the internet. seen's suggestion is nice, but he's a programmer... programmers (most of them) can't design to save their asshole. They want to fool around with code.

Oh and actionscripting can be a pretty intense language when you get sophisticated with cookies and all that bullshit.
