Thread: Thinking of buying a Neo-Geo AES

Meh Thinking of buying a Neo-Geo AES

Well this system was never affordable to me, but by luck I found a store that will be getting one in, the games were also 20 a piece. I Bought Alpha Misson 2 for $20 odd cause the case was English but the cart and manual was Japanese, did it come out for JP? Also Real Bout JP for $30. Why? I did that cause I was thinking of getting a system someday. Now there might be a chance for me to get a AES system for $100 - $200 not sure if it will be boxed or not. Is that a good price I know little about Neo Geo nor do I follow auction sites. Thoughts?

  2. AES Cart prices seem to have come down alot with the exception of a few games.

Personally, I don't think it is worth investing in one at this point in time. You can play most of the good games either on another system, and Xbox/PS2 are getting ports of the latest games as well (you might have to import some). If you are interested in the old stuff, they are pretty cheap right now (Not sure if this is a trend or just a cyclical downturn, as I am seeing Saturn imports prices plummet as well).

It is a neat system but it has come to an end (perhaps overstaying its welcome). I was a huge fan of the system and its games back in the day but I haven't played mine in over 2 years and sold a crap load of the older games for a song.

  3. this is the only time i will ever reply to something you post without being an ass, so revel in it.

finding a neogeo AES system at 100-200 is a pretty solid deal as long as it comes with all the hookups and at least 1 title.

    BUT

the AES neogeo system is fine if you just want to play old favorites(fatal fury2/aof1/league bowling/etc). But if you want to play some of the more recent titles on the cheap, you WILL need an MvS~AES converter such as the Phantom-1.

    Why?

let's say you want KOF2k3. Well, whatever the home cart would cost(normal price for newer games on the AES are around 300+), the arcade(mvs) version would be alot cheaper(probably 150-220). This way you can just pick up all the titles you want in their arcade MVS version for WAY less(normally) slap em in the phantom-1 and bam. you're ready and rockin.

and as a precaution, never EVER EVER EVER EVER in the history of your neogeo gaming life try to worry about whether carts are legit or not. if it will save you a few hundred bucks, grab a bootleg. you should be buying this system because you are a gamer, not a collector(also, keep an eye out as most neogeo fanatics are the most assinine people on the face of the earth).

MrWhitefolks has basically said all there is to it. Buying a Supergun and an MVS board might be a better route if you plan on buying more PCBs in the future, but if it's just going to be Neo Geo, you may as well get the AES and Phantom 1.

I'd like to add, though, about what he said about Neo Geo fanatics translates to: avoid the neo-geo.com forums. Spending too much time there has hurt my brain. Some... no, most of the people there are completely insane. Don't listen to anything they tell you. Ever.

I wouldn't run out for the sole purpose of buying a bootleg, but sometimes it does happen, and I imagine anyone with a big MVS library would come across one at least once. But yeah, if it's the difference between $150 and $350...

  5. MVS is the only way to go. It has exclusive titles over the AES console, and the prices fair far better. Also, if you go the console MVS route, you'll have all of the AES standards with the help of the Uni Bios. Hell, now you can even get shockboxes to make all of the AES fanboys and baby jesus cry. AES gaming is reserved only for those who care more about how their shelf looks.

And that sums up quite nicely why I've been without a Neo for... about 6 years now. The scene is ruined, no point in going back. Don't worry if it's bootlegged or not? Are you kidding me? Why would anyone get a homecart system if they don't have at least a little collector in them? There's far cheaper ways to enjoy the Neo (hell, if you're not against bootleg carts just play every last Neo game for free via an emulator).

The Neo scene used to be really cool. Just lots of enthusiastic gamers who'd play the shit out of their carts. Now? Bleh, it makes me sick...

  7. You could always emulate first and see what you like first, unless you are looking at your purchases from a collectors point of view

Think about what I have typed below, the opinion I give is taken from reading and watching the entire neo-geo scene go to ass over the years. I've owned 3 different neo systems, and I talk from experience.

look, why the hell would i go out of my way to buy a legit copy of an mvs cart for a game that came out over 6 years ago? that's not supporting the company a damn bit(snk got their money when they sold those carts to the distributors). the only reason people bitch about bootleggers is because the people that bootleg games are mostly scamming douchebags(dion/japhei/etc).

hell, at least im honest. if it's a tossup between a 103.00 version and a 450.00 version you can bet your god damn bottom dollar that i'm picking up the boot(especially considering that the majority of SNK's recent titles have been absolute garbage). it's about playing the games and being a gamer. not being some self absorbed SNK collecting cockstain.

ps...i already have all the roms on my xbox, but i still own(and purchase) tons neogeo games(80% of which are LEGIT).

I dunno, maybe to not support scumbags who are making money off of something that isn't even there's? Hmmmm?

That is beyond stupid. If it's about playing the game, then play it in MAME 100% flawlessly for free and save yourself a lot of money and hassle. If you're going to bootleg, why not bootleg the 100% free route that also cuts the scumbag out of the picture?

And why do you have a stick up your ass over collecting? Since when can gamers not collect things?

  10. I love my Neo-Geo...I have home console and over 40 carts.
