Thread: Half-Life 2 - official (9/14 Black Mesa Source?!)

  1. finally got it working and having a blast so far. but i will say theres two things that have been nagging at me the whole time, and one is a carryover from the original. valve cannot code good movement on ladders. i have NEVER had so much trouble with ladders in any other fps as i have with the hl games. you can slip off very easily when you dont want to or oftentimes get stuck to it when you want to jump to a ledge. the other complaint (okay theres two more) is the physics. there have been times when an npc just "force bumps" me out of the way. one time right off the ledge when i was in the junkyard. and there have been some times underwater when i have gotten stuck under things and then bounced straight to the bottom. not very bad things and in light of the rest of the game very able to be overlooked.

and why cant you shoot the npc's!!?? thats what i loved about the first game.

and after getting the gravity gun......the game changes completely. man its so cool to grab the saw blades out of the walls. please tell me it gets even better?

in that art book, it's mentioned that valve toyed with allowing the player to damage them. caused too many problems, especially since so many of them are abosolutely vital to your mission progress. unlike the first game.

  3. Has Valve said anything about upgarding packages over steam? I actually would like to get the GOLD now.

    It does get better.

Oh, and one thing about the ladders... I was having trouble, too, until I realized all you have to do is press E to let go. I never had any trouble falling off, I got stuck to them like glue =X

start steam, click "browse games" in the main games window. the following is written next to the hl2 steam packages:
Thank you! You have already purchased Half-Life 2 on Steam. At present, only one HL2 offer may be purchased per Steam account.
    it'll happen eventually.

    many thanks

  7. Just finished it.

GOTY 2004, by far. Christ, that was amazing. Yeah, the boat scene was a bit long, but that's the only thing I can think of that I disliked. One of the best singleplayer games I've played, easily.

For some reason, I was NOT expecting the ending to be in line with the first game. Half-Life 3 will be unbelievable.

Oh! I remember something from the later trailers that didn't show up in the game.

The blue tenticles. Odd, as that looked pretty cool.

I think I'm gonna poke around the maps and whatnot now.

  8. W-w-w-well, I just beat th-the game, and although i-it was great-t-t-t-t-t-t, there were still some is-is-issues that could have been impro-o-o-o-o-o

  9. re: tain's second spoiler.

the blue tentacled thing (nicknamed the hydra) was ted blackman's baby, so to speak. he loved the design and it really looked impressive snaking through the maps, piercing enemies, etc.

for several months, he proceeded to work on its AI away from the rest of the team, even building set pieces specifically designed around the hydra. one nagging detail kept it from being included. it wasn't fun to fight. it could do all this cool stuff, but when it attacked gordon, all it could do was sort of stab at him. looked rather lame in first person.

even after cutting it, ted would still love to get it into a future half-life game.

this is all from that book i mentioned earlier, raising the bar.

to anyone reading that hasn't played/finished the game, i don't think the above is anything resembling a spoiler, so feel free to read. i was only following tain's lead.

    edit: screw it. untagged.

  10. I actually thought about the tentacles too. Also, it looked like an early version of Ravenholm that was more citylike was cut (where you roll the grenade under the dumpster to make it fall on people, I think it was the first trailer ever shown).
