Thread: Half-Life 2 - official (9/14 Black Mesa Source?!)

  1. epmode, I'm aware of the backstory. It just seems so radically different that it barely feels like a sequel. Like, Half-Life was Pitch Black and Half-Life 2 is The Chronicles of Riddick.

And I wouldn't be so annoyed with the ending if I didn't love the rest of the game as much as I did. As it is, it just felt lazy. This isn't an episode of the Outer Limits, it's a game people have waited six years for, and many people spent upwards of $80 to get. It deserves more of an ending than "weird guy says cryptic shit and hints at a sequel, the end!"

I dunno. The G-Man felt like such a cool character at the end of Half-Life, but in this game he felt like a TV show host for a sci-fi series. And as cool as he is, he's still no Rod Serling.

  2. we are in agreement on the g-man. i only hope we finally learn more about him in the inevitible sequel.

as for the rest of the game, you already know how i feel. it's most cohesive videogame world i've ever seen. i'm still not sure how you can complain about the world being radically different, considering how limited in scope the original game was.

i prefer to think of hl2 as james cameron's Aliens, in that it intelligently expands the universe of a great, but less ambitious work. (though unlike Aliens, half-life 2 is ultimately better than the original.)

I disagree. Although there's alot of new stuff and the setting is radically different, there's alot of the same kind of action, alot of familiar stuff brought back and alot of nice references to the original help it feel connected.

Funny that Gamespot's main complaint was that it was too much like the original...

Also, spoiler tags, Andrew, you fucktard

What makes you so sure of that? Do you think HL3 will be any less ambitious?

  5. I'd be offended but I'm not entirely sure what the word fucktard means. I am just going to assume that it meant delightful chap. At any rate I'll put up a spoiler tag for you.

Here it is, just for you big guy.

  6. God damn Ravenholm is the scariest place ever.

I'm not too big of a fan of the level just because like JMET said I prefer fighting soliders in big open spaces rather than the claustrophobic and eerie feel of Ravenholm, but for what it is, it's a great level. I'm scared shitless of that guy that throws the poisonous spiders, not the mention the super fast headcrab dudes.

And to think that poor Gordon has to go through all this just cuz he's too fat to fit through a crack in a pile of rocks.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  7. I wish they had a gun where you could see the heat of the next room. Or googles... that way you could see that the room holds 3 guards waiting for you and plan your first move into the room, taking them out stragetically....

Ravenholm was awesome. Nice and scary, the dropping cars rocked!

Well, wasn't what took so long last time creating the Source engine? I figure HL3 will just use a modified version of that and hopefully take less than half the time HL2 took to create.

My only complaint is how impatient Combine soldiers are. If I hide, they invariably rush me after 30 seconds and earn a shotty to the face for the trouble. I really go out of my way to make the fights more interesting... I grab barrels to block their shots, rush them and shoot the barrel at them, goad then into throwing grenades so I can gravity gun them back... there's a ton of insanely cool stuff you can do that I just don't because they're too easy to kill.

The soldiers in HL were like 10x harder.
