To me it's not about an eye for an eye or revenge at all, I honestly don't see why we should tolerate the very existance of people who, for some reason, think they have the right to end the lives of others. They're a poison and, before someone quotes this and says "murder to punish murder" again, I see it as self defense for our society.
So I forced my hands in my pockets and felt with my thumbs and gallantly handed her my very last piece of gum.
It is both. The 'eye-for-an-eye' thing is out of context. We've taken that away from individual citizens (see: State of Nature) and handed it to the state.Originally Posted by MysteriousRacerC

This doesn't mean we should execute murderers in a room adjoining the court immediately following the sentencing phase! I'm all for suspending current death penalty cases and making sure (as best we can) that we've prosecuted the right person.
Society has a number of tools at its disposal for meting out justice. Do not the most heinous crimes necessitate the most powerful tool of justice?

Killing them doesnt bring the victims back for the family. Its just vengeance, silly and stupid bloodlust. It really is, in many ways, society lowering itself to the murderer's level. Why should this be tolerated?Originally Posted by Jeremy
I used to be for the death penalty, but then I did some serious inquiries into it and found unbelievable problems, both from a legal standpoint and a moral one. Like, the fact that black people are more likely to be given the death penalty than a white person for the same crime. Like the fact that death row inmates are being released all the time because of new DNA information. How it costs more, on average, to keep someone on the death penalty. People getting screwed by shitty public defenders. Stuff like that. How can our justice system be sure this guy is guilty? How can any? We do our best but we all know how imperfect the system is. Why give an imperfect system such power?
Actually, I honestly do think that most everybody who looks into the death penalty, and the state of it in the US and other countries today, comes away... not being in favor of it.

diff, I was agreeing with you. I believe that the killer should just be forced to rot. They've put folks through Hell, and they'll be forced to see just a glimpse of what that's like, only they'll still get the privalege to be alive. I don't think that killing someone is justifiable in anyway, and yes, the death penalty does lower "the system" down to their level, perhaps even moreso as it isn't just used for murderers, and it's a pretty cold and calculated murder at that.

I'm pretty sure they don't feel any remorse for the most part. Those people usually fall into the capital murder status.Originally Posted by Jeremy

When someone has to stay in jail for the rest of their life as a consequence of their violent crime, they have plenty of time to think about what they have done and its aftermath. Death is too kind. Life in prison is just right for violent offenders. Terry Nichols deserves to have the rest of his life to ponder what he has done, who he has hurt, and the fact that he would not have gone there if he didn't do the deed.
If a wrongly convicted inmate is in jail, they can be let out. You can't free a dead person.

on top of that, is jail ever not a living hell for non white collar criminals?

Opponents of the death penalty often make the argument that capital punishment is inhumane, cruel or unusual.
How interesting that so many ppl here are advocating life imprisonment b/c it inflicts greater pain and suffering on a living human being...
