But you're right this isn't the perfect world, and the rules can't bend for these few between cases. If only taxpayers weren't paying for them.

Just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean you chuck it completely. This is neither a perfect world nor an enlightened society. We need capital punishment because our society produces far too many murderous psychopaths. Murderers need to be removed from our society, permanently. I'm all for attacking the social roots of what causes people to become violent murderers, but that doesn't obviate the need to punish.Originally Posted by diffusionx
The process, however, needs overhauling, streamlining, and the equalization of legal representation. Like Bill Maher said, "There's nothing wrong with executing people; we're just killing the wrong ones."
When you're dealing with people's lives, when you're talking about giving the state the power to kill people, then yes, yes you do. Sorry, but we're not talking about welfare or social security or something, we're talking about killing people. That's for real and talking about it like its just another flawed government program is ludicrous to the extreme.Just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean you chuck it completely.
I'm not clear how the "It's an imperfect world!" is supposed to be a savage indictment of capital punishment. The statement itself makes a pretty good argument in favor of the death penalty.
In all seriousness, tho, I understand where ppl come from on this. 'We might kill an innocent person!' I agree this is a definite concern and should be addressed.
I think the following phrase is often abused and over-used, but isn't the idea behind 'Justice delayed is justice denied', a fair one? I think systems of justice are fundamentally about doing what is fair and NOT requiring the life of murderers is not fair (it also cheapens the value society places on innocent life by lowering the price for it and, further, by saying all lives are equal).
Executing an innocent man is not justice. Allowing a murderer to avoid the death penalty is not justice.

By who's logic? Hammurabi's? Like I already said, killing someone, no matter who it is, is barbaric and evil. Giving that power to the state is a horrible, horrible thing. It doesn't solve anything, it is simply a hollow act of stupid and frenzied bloodlust.Allowing a murderer to avoid the death penalty is not justice.
Remember, the death penalty is NOT acting as a deterrent from crimes. It's certainly not helping to reduce the prison population. It is just a good way for politicians to say they're "tough on crime". Its helping to support the prison industrial complex which is getting more and more insane every year. A couple years ago, when California was facing like a $35 billion deficit, Grey Davis was proposing to spend $500 million on building a new prison for people on death row. Good policy? You tell me.
You're a pretty smart guy, so I'm going to let you mull over your own hyperbole and tell me what's wrong w/this statement.Originally Posted by diffusionx

what the fuck?
I just got back from Daytona Beach last night.
If a man can kill once then they can kill again.
Your mind is the most fragile thing going, like a piece of wire, if that piece of wire snaps there is no going back, you cant fix that wire so sticking them in prison is no good because as soon as they get out the chances are they will do it again because they are broken
You get me?
So i say as soon as you know they are guilty they should be hung, of injected or the electric chair.
The world is a better place without them. A safer place without them.
This should stand for murderers, rapists and other scum of the earth.
