Once you start setting up fictional restrictions for yourself that the game does not enforce, you're on your way to losing. Playing under a handicap may make you feel better about yourself, but it doesn't in any way make you a better player. Rubbin's racing. Ask the big boys.
And I find the idea of "honor" in an arcade racing game to be hilarious.
Hell, it's an essential skill in Wangan Midnight- especially with the Tension Meter system where your life depletes based on how far ahead an opponent is. Right at the start of a 2P race, I'd have the wheel turned toward the opponent in hopes of forcing them into the wall and then taking off. No penalty = no foul. In a game, honor is nothing but an unnecessary, unrewarded risk.
