Having adults working in your factories instead of 8-year-olds also helps...

I don't buy too much stuff that comes from the states, since most of what I buy is electronics, but the few american-made things I do have are top-notch.
My Mag-Lite is the best flash light I've ever had, and my Kabar combat knife is totally sweet. A lot of the best tools come from the states as well.

It seems like american companies really shine at manufacturing the heavy duty type stuff. Of course, the US also dominates in the manufacturing of high-end semiconductor products like CPUs and GPUs.

I think we might see a lot of electronics manufacturing moving back to western countries in the not-so-distant future because cheap labor is becoming less important compared to shipping costs. Robots operate just as cheaply in the US as they do in Taiwan, afterall, and manufacturing is an increasingly automated field. Why manufacture your products overseas and ship it back to the states when you don't have to?

Only until the unions figure out a way to sign them up.

  3. I have a Leatherman Tool, its by far the best tool known to humankind, and everyone with a penis needs to have one. Its about a million times better than those wussy Swiss Army Knives.

  4. I have 2 pairs of black Timberland insulated boots. They have lasted me through 6.5 years of MN winter in college, and I still wear 'em when it snows.

IBTN. My parents gave me a Dremel and a Leatherman Wave for Christmas last year, and I have to say, those were probably the two best gifts I've ever received. There's a newly redesigned Leatherman Wave coming soon, too. There is no better pocket tool, and there's no excuse not to own one.

The Dremel is one of the most useful things ever made, right next to the Leatherman and roofies.
