If I knew I was going to grow out of Japanese games this year, I would have never of bought the PS2. The only games I own for it are music games, so that being said it collects a lot of dust.

Anybody who would actually claim that the PS2 has no games beyond quirky Japanese titles - or Japanese titles period - is no better than the "faggot-chans" that they make fun of. Beyond the handfull of exclusive titles that all consoles have, the PS2 has nearly every worthwhile non-Japanese game that the other two consoles do.
What the PS2 doesn't have that the Xbox does is a solid online set-up, and a number of those games with either better experiences online, or an online option at all where the PS2 version doesn't have it. But that wasn't the argument we were having.
JSRFuture could have come from an American or European company, and I still would have loved it just as much. I HATED the idea of the game at first, I hated the changes they had made over the original. (Change in how you tag, for example.) However, once I actually gave the game a shot, it is in almost all ways a better game than the original. The original's stages now feel too small and cramped, control is far better in Future, "no more stopping required" tagging is much more fun, the soundtrack was just as good as the original, the quality and possibility of grind runs was, for the most part, much improved over the original, grind combos were always tallied opposed to the original where you may or may not be shown your combo, the added "tricks" - while not all that complex - gave the game some extra flair over the original, and so on.Surprise, you like one of the rare Japanese games on XBOX and it just so happens to be one of the worst games on the system.
It wasn't all good. The difficulty level - or lack of one - was utterly insulting. A few of the stages were under-realized in trick possibilities, the lack of a tag downloading system wasn't made up for by the crap tag editor, and there were a few other snags. Still, the game is phenominal, and in more ways than not shames the original. And this is coming from somebody who went into the game determined to hate it.

I personally think the only games that are worthwhile on PS2 are GTA3, Ico, Rez and Star Ocean 3 (and ToS when it comes out because I'm not buying a Cube for it). Of those, GTA is on Xbox and Rez on DC and very very downloadable. Beyond that, I'm not really feeling like I'm missing out on much. Snake Eater will be missed, as will San Andreas but I know there's only so many games I can play and Xbox/PC has spoken for them all.
It's really a matter of taste, which goes without saying, and what genres you perfer to play. For me, I need multiplayer (the sole reason I went from wanting to play Star Ocean 3 and NEEDING to play it is multiplayer) for a game to be worthwhile and failing that it has to be something like Morrowind or Fable.

For me the primary reason to own the PS2 has always been it's RPG library, which so completely and utterly destroys that of the GC and XBox it's not even funny. In one financial quarter the PS2 seems to get just about as many RPGs released for it as the GC or XBox individually have EVER gotten to date, it's phenomenal. Niche stuff like DDR and Mr Mosquito and what have you the PS2 also has the clear advantage in.
In just about every OTHER category, though, the XBox & GC have made great strides forward and now just about equal or even exceed that of the PS2.
XBox is generally worth owning for having a nice set of exclusive titles or games that the system got the best version of like KotOR and the Splinter Cell games. This thread has also mentioned just about made mention of everything worth owning for the system, and there's quite a bit.
As much of a Nintendo fanboy I've always been even I have to admit the XBox has clearly surpassed them into 2nd place in the current console wars and they have definitely had the best online strategy and network behind the system. Far and away worth owning, they've come a long way since launch when Halo was basically their one and only bread and butter game for the longest time.

Xbox beats the other systems as far as FPS are concerned. My favorite kind of game is RPG though and PS2 has all the best ones (especially since I am a Square whore).

I am actually not feeling the current Japanese RPGs anymore. I've grown out of them. I'm just getting tired of the whole Anime-inspired themes and designs that most of them have. I'm also getting tired of most new anime, so take that as you will.
Like Tracer, I feel like I'm not missing much by not owning a PS2. There are few games that I wish I could play, and those few do not outnumber the games I still desire to own on Xbox and just haven't gotten around to buying yet. The funny thing is that my friends don't even own a PS2, so I can't play what I'm missing at my friends like other people. And I don't care.
About JSRF, it's obvious that it's a love/hate game. I personally love it. The changes were okay with me, and didn't make the game less than JSR in any way; just different. There is nothing inherently wrong with the gameplay, so I can't see how this is one of the worst game on the box. And if it somehow is, then MS is doing a great job!
I'm asking this as a serious question and not a flame, though it probably sounds like the latter: has Square produced any good non-FF RPGs for PS2? Or any good non-RPG games for PS2 at all? It kind of irritates me because I can't think of any off the top of my head, and because they released so many original, quality PS1 titles in all kinds of genres. It seems like they dump all their effort into the next FF title and let some halfhearted shit drop out in between. I mean, I liked the Bouncer, all 5 minutes of actual gameplay, but we just haven't see stuff like Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, Einhander, Bushido Blade, Chrono Cross, Tobal 2, Threads of Fate, or Brave Fencer Musashi (though that'll be changing soon) on PS2. Granted, stuff like Bushido Blade 2 wasn't that good, but I just want to see them doing some more varied, interesting things again. I mean, on PS2 there was... uh, Drakengard, and Unlimited SaGa, but... who cares? I can't be the only one who finds Square's output uninteresting this generation. I'm curious to see what Sakaguchi's Mist Walker does, though.
Anyway, back to the point of the thread, I just packed a bunch of games to take with me back to Boston, and I took a couple PS2 titles, but the vast majority of them were Xbox games. Should tell you something. There's not much else I can say that anyone else didn't already, though. It's a worthy purchase, there's something for everyone, and nothing even comes close for netplay. If you like fighting games and have broadband, not owning an Xbox is probably a bad move. Lots of good stuff coming, and CvS2, despite Capcom's shitty netcode, is playable from time to time.
I wish more Japanese RPGs would take inspiration from American-style RPGs. KOTOR blew me away. Can't remember the last Japanese RPG that did that.
Anyway, I like JSRF a lot. I like the colors and environments of the first a lot better, but it's a lot of fun, despite the lack of challenge. I don't get why it's so hated. It's a bit different, but it's not like it took your copy of JSR away, broke it, and then killed your dog and took a sloppy shit down your throat.
