  2. You know what's awesome? Not a single post trying to say that there's a "secret plan" to draft people. Congratulations, TNL, for having an great discussion.

The way I see it Iraq was positively not fucking with us, and we should have left it that way.
While I don't agree, I applaud you sticking to your guns.

My Senior Drill Instructor said something along those lines when I was at Parris Island:

"Half of you are all fucking idiots but it's not your fault, it's your parents fault because they don't know how to raise fucking children. I don't get it recruits, I really don't, you need a liscence to have a gun, you need a liscence to drive a car but you don't need a liscence to have kids and half the time it's because some dumb mother fucker doesn't pull out and busts his nut all up in that shit."

Concerning the "no reason to go to war with Iraq", Iraq was an easy target in the Middle East, Saddam was a bad dude and they either had WMD that were exported to Syria towards the start of the war or were in the process of having some within the next few years so we chose them to take a foothold in the Middle East. Having a foothold there does two things, the first one is it draws out a lot of terrorists and turns them into US military cannon fodder and it insures the US has a strong presence in the Middle East helping to insure a stable oil economy, which in the coming years may lead to instability and we'll have countries like China rolling over the Middle East with no opposition if we don't prepare now. It's called surviving.

You believe correctly. I was an actuarial science major and currently a statistician by trade, so...

  8. Here's a theory, I think they knew there weren't any WMDs and that's exactly why they invaded so quickly instead of just rattling the saber for a while, because that would have given Saddam the time to put his weapons programs into high gear in preparation for an American invasion. You think the "left" and the American people are miffed now because we've lost a thousand troops and found no WMDs? One can only imagine the royal shitstorm that would have settled over the White House had we lost five thousand troops in an hour because a desperate Saddam threw every chemical, bio, or nuclear weapon he could jury rig at us.

It's become clear to me this war was a very calculated plan to secure the world's second largest oil supply from a hostile dictatorship. While I must admit I admire the skill in which they orchestrated the entire operation to have a veneer of legitimacy, I'm chilled to the bone with how easily the American people are manipulated when the true intentions are barely hidden beneath the surface.

Yeah I know this is totally off-topic, but I figured it was better put here than trying to resurrect the Iraq thread.

As far as the draft bill goes? I for one think Rangel knew it didn't have a chance and instead wanted to make the argument that if there was a draft (an all-inclusive one as he was proposing) the U.S. would not be near as likely to go to war nor would the people probably support one because it could potentially directly affect them. It's a good way to jump-start the electorate into participating in the democratic process, but only in theory and I don't think putting American lives at risk is worth it just to make a point.

  9. You don't get to say you have a theory and then say therefore something is clear to you.

At least...not with a straight face.

  10. No. You're obviously not reading what I wrote carefully. The theory is how they went about it, what's clear is the reason they did it.
