Thread: poker, any fans?

  1. Do you discuss stuff which appears on TNL in your social life? I don't.
I come here to talk about things which I can't normally because 90% of people my age are too dumb, to read interesting articles, and to raise questions now and again.

Sometimes it's hard not to. TNL's my first source for news. With all the scoop monkeys in here, it seems there's not a game, movie or celebrity death that isn't broke by someone here first (or at least seconds later). Fuck Yahoo, CNN or even Ain't it Cool News!

  3. That's the reason for coming to TNL. TNL offers you things to discuss. It is not an alternative to social life, just an addition.

  4. I've been playing NL Holdem for about 3 years now. I used to play alot on Party Poker, but there are too many noobs on there (I play at the low stakes tables .. i'm cheap).

So I moved over to Paradise Poker ... its a bit smaller, but alot nicer. They have most of the perks that Party Poker has. If anyone is ever interested in setting up a table at either site ... I would be game. (8p est - 11p est)

Some great "in house" poker games are: Guts, Criss-Cross, Chase the Queen and three card poker.

  5. I've won $6 playing Texas Hold'em, but that's the extent of my experience. It's good fun to play with friends for a small amount of money, but I could never put a large chunk down on it.
bastard of the new world order.

People probably bluff more online than they do in live games.
and besides it's a social event.
It would be like going out drinking with your friends, but just going to a chat room instead at your own homes with a beer on the table.
    Pointless really.
It depends. If you're playing for fun then yeah, I suppose it's kind of pointless. If you're playing for money, then it's not pointless at all.

I play at PokerStars.com, and lately I've been crushing the $5 and $10 Sit and Gos. Which is good, because I'm currently unemployed.

  7. I've been playing texas holdem casually for about a year. I play a regular, vvvvery low stakes game with some friends.

Im just starting to get into strategy....

    www.twoplustwo.com

    is an interesting poker site

  8. A few of my friends have started getting me into no-limit, which I've found entertaining. I like it better than Limit, since it feels so much harder to bluff or muscle people out of a limit hand.

I was in Vegas last weekend, so I decided to give it a shot at the game they had running at the Flamingo. I wound up winning a couple hundred bucks before stopping, which felt pretty good since I hadn't played for money before.

Social event? I consider poker a MONEY event, which may or may not have a social component.

If you just play strictly for fun, that's one thing. I have a lot of fun playing but I also play it to make money. If you're like this, online poker most definitely does not suck. You can play many more hands than you can in a casino and of course you don't have to make the trip.

Yes you do lose the social aspects of it. There's no doubt it is more fun to play in a home game or in a casino but online poker is incredibly convenient and can actually be more profitable.

The social component is the largest component of the game. Reading your opponents, faking them out, knowing their tendancies, using chit chat to distract, etc etc. Much bigger part of the game than the cards you are dealt. Hell, it's quite often the cards you are dealt don't mean shit for who wins.

I'm getting quite good at the game amongst my friends, I'm always the big winner for the night. Now I'm interested in expanding and actually becoming good for real.
