i can't explain it, but the old ones work and the new ones don't. I've had many a movie ruined by watching it now after i loved it as a kid but star wars isn't one of them. The originals are good movies and the new ones aren't, and that's it for many many people. I don't understand defending the new movies by trashing the old ones, trying to bring them down to the level of 1-3, they really don't deserve it.

It served it's purpose, it gave yoda a background other than what's seen in the Jedi Council, and it gives the fan boys even more reason to wear thier yoda underoos.
If you need a tampon or a tissue, just let us know, no need to get all huffy puffy.

I got the pre-remastered vhs tapes in a hot boxed set but not the original boxed set. How much do you think it's worth?
check starwars.com, they should have it up by now...Originally Posted by Will
I'd say the dividing line between SF and fantasy is, there's more effort put into explaining the science in sci-fi than there is explaining the fantasy element in, uh, fantasy. Whatever scientific marvel SF stories had to offer, they play as big a role in the story as the main characters.Originally Posted by Mman
SW looks futuristic with its crazy lightsabers and spaceships and cities in the clouds and etc., but it was never a priority to explain why everything looks or works that way. If the setting wasn't so modern it would be easier to make the distinction between SF and fantasy I think.
SW is definitely pulp adventure though.

The way it's always seemed to me is that fantasy generally revolves magic (including the possibilities of casting magic, magical monsters, magical worlds, etc.) and sci-fi tends to stick to high technology. Not nessecarily how much they explain (if they do so at all) but merely what elements are used/focused on.Originally Posted by Taito
Star Wars is a lot of futuristic technology, laser guns, laser swords, interplanetary transportation, flying vehicles, robot droids, etc. The force is a mystical power (and they do actually try a few times at explaining it, as opposed to the technology of which they don't explain a single thing in any of the movies) but it's more of an addition to the universe then it is the overriding basis of how their worlds work. Compare to LotR, where magic is in their weapons, their monsters, ways to control animals, it's how certain races live, it's the very basis for just about everything in the world. The book War of the Flowers is fantasy as while the setting is modern day, the focus of the different aspects is all magical with no additional technological elements.
Or you could say heck with it and go with Xanth's idea and say that science is just our version of magic.![]()
