Thread: Star Wars Episode III official thread

All the disgusting advertising they've stuck into everything from M&M's to American Idol makes me not want to watch this movie. I think for the 2 hours my TV was on last night, Star Wars was mentioned in every show.

  2. Saw the 12:01 showing last night. It was good (better than the first two prequels in most ways) but not great. It wasn't as good as the Original Trilogy (OT) and it wasn't up to all the advance hype it had been getting. It was a typical Star Wars Prequel movie- explosive CG overload, slightly wooden acting, a lack of charisma (though not as horrible in that regard as the first two movies), a rushed storyline, and the relationships between the characters felt forced. In the OT there was plenty of personality, and the relationships felt real and believable. I think a major tell-tale sign of this fact is that, when the OT was out, kids always wanted to play as Luke, Han, and Leia. Nowadays I never hear kids saying they want to play as Anakin, Obi-Wan, or Padme. Eh, whatever.

    Random comments (spoilers):

Man, the Jedi are DICKS. I really don't understand why someone would want to be one based on their behavior in this movie. They're not allowed to love, get married, have kids, get angry, form attachments to anyone or anything, want to succeed- basically the things that make you human. It's worse than being a Catholic priest! I'm surprised that Mace didn't have any 'scandals' with the younglings (BTW, I despise the term 'younglings'). Obi-Wan told Anakin that only the Sith think in absolutes, but that easily describes the Jedi as well.

Man, did Anakin become REALLY evil REALLY fast? I mean, one second he's turning in Palapatine for being a Sith Lord, the next second he's chopping up roomfulls of little kiddies and buying every little thing Sidious says. The turn came waaay too fast. Lucas really should have been planting the major seeds for it in the second movie- here, it just feels silly how fast he turned and embraced the Dark Side.

Man, that "NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" Vader let out just emasculated him, didn't it?

    HORRIFIC DIALOGUE ALERT:

    "Padme, you look so beautiful!"

    "It's becaue I'm in love!"

"No! It's because I'm in love with YOU!"

The crowd cracked up at this point.

Wow, those big walking battle droids ae tough. Too bad they aren't fireproof.

The fight scenes were great, but the over-reliance on ridiculous special effects/CG backgrounds was numbing. There was far more drama in Luke's battle with Vader in Empire and Jedi without them fighting on structures that were slowly sinking into lava.

I don't get the fact that, in the Prequels, either you're Jedi or Sith, totally good or totally evil. Anakin's turn was too out of nowhere and it was almost silly how evil he became so quickly. If anything, it gives me way more respect for Luke Skywalker- he had strong emotions, he cared about Leia and his friends, he allowed himself to become angry, and he used that anger and emotion to ultimately defeat Darth Vader. Yet afterwards, he didn't turn. THAT'S how it should be. Allowing yourself to be human without submitting to evil. As I said above, the whole concept of the Jedi was silly.

Darth Sidious was so goddamn evil. He was awesome.

Not enough Vader (the armored one, anyway).

Anakin wasn't nearly as annoying in this movie. He was actually somewhat cool when he turned.

The movie was tied in really well to the OT. But really, how hard was THAT to do?

It was pretty cool when the Clone Troopers turned on the Jedi. Well-done scene.

Obi-Wan riding giant cute lizard: -10.

Jar-Jar gets 2-second cameo, no lines, and looks really, really sad: +10.

General Grevious was an interesting character. I really thought some carnage was gonna go down when he busted out the 4 sabers, but he really didn't do anything special. Shame.

Padme died of a broken heart. Give me a fucking break.

I always thought the story went that Vader fell INTO the lava, but I guess that would have made him surviving a little unbelievable. The end of the Anakin/Obi-Wan fight was good drama and the closest to genuine, non-wooden acting we've seen out of the Prequels.

Jedi are pussies, they always want to double-team the bad guys.

The Burger King commercials are both the best and worst in this regard- they're funny, but man, they just cheapen Star Wars more than anything else.

  3. I liked the film a lot more than I thought I would have. Not sure how it fits into the whole Star Wars thing because it had such strange pacing compared to the original trilogy. Moved very fast, perhaps too fast.

  4. Dolemite--In regards to Luke it all depends on your interpretation of returning "balance to the Force." From what I've seen in the Jedi Knight games and from what I've been told that about the book sequels Luke doesn't follow the strict Jedi teachings and his academy isn't as traditional. He was never really a full fledged Jedi anyway. He falls in love and has kids, no? I think the balance is passion and selflessness.

That's because they had a retarded amount of stuff to fit in there.

  6. I have a feeling I will never see this again. I never want to see I-II and III when I can just watch the far better IV-VI. I really think GL needs to be given a good beating for all three prequals.

Granted the movie had its good parts, everytime I think about how good the originals were, I can't help but be dissappointed with the new ones.

I agree with you totally about Luke being an untraditional Jedi and having balance- that's what I was talking about.

As far as Luke getting married and having kids and all, that wasn't in the movies, so Lucas probably doesn't consider it canon.

  8. I read all the scenes that were cut out of the movie ... and it makes me almost want to wait for the directors cut DVD. Not that the scenes are so awesome ... but they seem to flesh the movie out more.

c/o TheForce.net....scenes that were shot and finished, but cut from the final theatrical release (below). Let's hope they make it into the DVD release, because it's a lot of scenes.

6, 7, 8-14, 25, 30, 32, 37-41: FedCruiser scenes cut (Grievous killing Shaak Ti, the Jedi using their lightsabers to escape GG, underwater swim, climb through shaft, many of R2's hangar gags, many Palpatine cliffhangers)

48: Mace greets Palpatine and the Jedi right after the crash-landing

56: Yoda, Obi-Wan and Mace discuss the Dark Side in Yoda's quarters

60: Bail and fellow Senators speak about the Senate

68-69: Obi-Wan tells Padme of his worries about Anakin and that he nows they're in love

71: Meeting with Organa, Mon Mothma and Padme

73: Anakin informs Palpatine that Obi-Wan soon will have Grievous' head

74: Jar Jar greets Anakin at Senate

    75: Anakin confronts Padme

76-77: Republic cruiser arrives at Utapau

83: Obi-Wan chooses his lizard, Boga

86: Mace talks to Yoda on Kashyyyk, telling him of his plans to arrest Palpatine

88-89: Padme presents to Palpatine the Senators' petition

I'd say this could've been split into 2 movies...but I wouldn't trust the actors to have more story to deliver.

But yeah, it felt rushed from the moment Dooku appeared/fell onwards. Bah I said that already.

I still can't get over Jedi Ledge Disorder.

  10. Wow...some of those cut scenes sound like major stuff.
