  5. about tonight's episode....

    Eko's flashbacks were probably by far the darkest in tone of any of the other characters, at least in the sense of brute violence and criminality. Mr. Eko was one evil dude, the part where he kills the two guys in one swoop made me cringe. His deeds as a drug dealer made Sawyer and Kate's respective criminal pasts look like bumbling child's play. His redemption scene on the airstrip was nicely done and I also liked the clever parallel between he and Charlie as both religious but deeply troubled and self contradictory characters.

    I also enjoy how the writers didn't take the easy way out with Charlie having a "dual redemption" with Eko when the plane and the heroin burns. I booed and hissed when I saw his stash of statues. Thanks goodness Claire stuck to her guns and kicked him out of her tent. Whiny liar. Problem is though, who will help watch over Aaron? A new opportunity for the 'lil guy to be stolen I am afraid. Not like Charlie could ever stop anybody though. So maybe Eko will get to ice some more of the Others later in behalf of Aaron.

    The creature, we still don't know WHAT it is and it had a few shades of the water spout from the Abyss (nothin' wrong with that 'tho), but man did we get a good look at it. That was a brilliant shot where the camera pans around Eko's head and then around and behind the CGI model of the smoke column. And did anyone notice there seemed to be at least two flickering video/HUD displays within the smoke one of which seemed to be displaying the blurry figure of someone's head? Maybe this is more indication the smoke trail was created and is indeed a "security system" being remote controlled by someone.

    Very neat, but I got a bit annoyed when the scene was interrupted just as "Walt" was telling Michael where to meet him. I guess though the implication was Michael saw the location and backspaced the text just as Jack arrived?

    One step closer to Walt and confrontation with the Others. "The Island belongs to us!" Sweet.

    Oh yeah, and the hair cut scene with Sawyer begrudgingly accepting the fact people like him now was great. Hurley: "Hey Sawyer, good to see you're alright, man!" Sawyer: "Grrr, pillsbury dough boy...."

    Nice though to see more confrimation that he and Michael have bonded and have respect/care about each other.

    So yeah, Eko is fucking badass. That's all that needs to be said about this episode.

  7. As I said in my reply before, yes there seemed to be some kind of HUD/video flickering within the smoke. Didn't Eko also tell Charlie "I wasn't afraid"? Or am I remembering wrong?

    Yeah, he said something like that. So in a sense, Eko isn't afraid to confront his past.

    Thanks, interesting thought there.

    Also, I am not entirely sure the smoke "chooses" to spare people based on whether or not they are "evil." Maybe that is why but it is still unpredictable. Remember, what happened to Eko tonight with the smoke column also happened to Locke way back early in season 1. We just didn't see it the first time, just a very brief camera view of Locke's face from the smoke's/monster perspective. "I looked into the eye of this Island and saw something beautiful." But later on, when they are on their way back to the hatch with the dynamite, it tries to kill Locke when he deliberately waits to "look into it" again.

    Why does the smoke sometimes "spare" people and what is the real reason as to why the Others have a "list" and choose people to kill and others to kidnap? The guy who was in the peace corps told Ana Lucia that "Nathan was not a good person" when asked why he was killed and that the children "are better off now." Some kind of strange standoff of morality obviously, maybe the same applies to the smoke somehow?

    edit: OK, I just saw what the "display" in the smoke was showing. Thanks for the link. Very interesting stuff!
